Downey has a background in Wrestling, competing in many folkstyle and freestyle matches over the years. In highschool Downey was a 3 sport athlete, competing in wrestling, lacrosse, and football. He would go on to set a school record for offensive plays in football, and was selected for the prestigious Super-22 Team, however Downey ran into alot trouble in his early years also, being charged multiple times for brawls and other offenses.

In wrestling he has earned medals at major tournaments including a bronze at the Pan-American Games, a silver at the World Wrestling Junior Championships, and medals at the Dave Schultz Memorial and US Open events. He also finished 5th at the 2016 NCAA Championships and picked up a bronze at the 2016 Big 12 Championships, going 17 - 4 in his NCAA matches.
