The sixth bout of Strikeforce: Tate vs Rousey featured Scott Smith taking on Lumumba Sayers in a middleweight matchup.
Sayers threw a punch and then changed levels, dumping Smith onto his back. Sayers transitioned to the back and threw a couple punches. Sayers opted to stand up and exchange on the feet, backing Smith down against the fence. Smith landed as well, but Sayers again dropped for a takedown, this time lifting Smith way up over his shoulder and slamming him down dramatically. Sayers escaped from a brief submission hold and tied on a guillotine choke of his own, forcing the tapout from Smith.
The official end came at 1:34 of the opening round with Lumumba Sayers winning via submission. Speaking to Mauro Ranallo in the post-fight interview, Sayers commented, "Jesus Christ is my lord and savior and whatever he gives me, I'm going to do it... I went through hell... they made me go at it [in training]... I'm going to take it one fight at a time, I'm humble."
