Far from an ideal situation for Tony who put his n°1 contender spot and 9-fight win streak on the line. But Tony had enough of waiting and wanted to solidify his spot. This sure was a risk, especially against a fighter like Kevin Lee, who had won 9 of his last 10 and was on a 5-fight win streak and getting the opportunity of his career. There wasn't much expectations for this fight as fans had been waiting for either an interim title fight between Tony and Khabib or Conor defending the belt against one of the two, but the fight delivered. There was some good heat between the two prior to the fight and even more on fight night. Both looked incredibly pumped, talking, smiling and staring at each other. There were concerns as Kevin Lee made his entrance and took off his shirt, revealing what looked like a staph infection on his left chest. But he looked fired up and came out strong in the first round, winning it big by mounting Tony and landing some big ground and pound at the end of the round and even landing an intentional blow after the bell, lighting up a fire in Tony. Tony slowly walked him down and a tired Kevin Lee came for round 3, looking to take the fight to the ground and doing so, but having to deal with an aggressive Tony off his back, surviving a close armbar at first but eventually getting caught in a triangle choke that sealed the deal for Tony, who just made it 10 in a row to become the interim champion. He came in as the slight underdog against a driven Dos Anjos eager to get the belt back. This was Tony's first scheduled 5-round fight and one of the rare times he went the distance, but the man still picked up his sixth post-fight bonus in five fights thanks to this brilliant performance, the best of his career up to this point. This time against a revitalized former champion in Anthony Pettis, who was coming off his biggest win in years with his shocking highlight real knockout of Stephen Thompson. A win would secure the next title shot against the winner of the massive blockbuster main event between Khabib and Conor. And while this fight might've been overshadowed by the unparalleled Khabib vs. Conor drama that followed and might've ended in somehow anticlimactic fashion, it ended up being one of the best fights of the year. A violent, bloody and wild battle between two of the most exciting fighters ever. The first round was very good, ending on a high note, but the second round was an absolute blast. Pettis dropping Tony, going for the kill only to find himself in a mask of blood courtesy of Tony's elbow and seeing him coming back even harder, him going full mad man on top of Tony was a classic moment and just the two smiling and laughing, having the time of their life and putting on a show was absolute gold. Pettis on his knees, beaten and going back to his corner at the end of round 2 with a broken hand, which put an anticlimactic end to the fight, was a bit disappointing but Tony Ferguson's comeback story and the emotion he showed after the fight made for a great moment. He was one of the hottest fighters in the UFC, was supposed to face Khabib earlier that year, the fight was cancelled, was then supposed to face Michael Chiesa on that card, but Chiesa pulled out of the fight, so he was offered a fight against good but virtually unknown prospect in his UFC debut in undefeated Lando Vannata on two weeks notice. He could've easily turn down the fight but decided to go for it anyway, and it almost cost him his win streak. Vannata took the opportunity with confidence and made the most out of it, looking like a legit top lightweight right away, like he belonged there among the best. He came out with remarkable confidence, looking and fighting very relaxed and fluid, hands down, doding punches beautifully and countering, stunning Ferguson a few times but quickly fading away and starting to eat more and more punches with his hadns down. Then came the moment he almost shocked the world, landing a brilliant head kick flush that put Tony in all sorts of trouble, having him rocked and flying all over the octagon as Lando went for the kill. But Tony displayed that exceptional ability to weather the storm and recover, surviving a wild and breathtaking first round. By the start of round 2, Lando was visibly tired as Tony pushed the pace and started landing at will as Lando marched forward with his hands down, busting his face up.
