Got this idea from the Ali vs Lee thread. So, who would win if they fought in a boxing match and both were in their primes. I'd have to go with ali because of his speed and reach.

Tyson

  Ali

Of course, Ali obviously has the advantage on the outside due to his reach. But what happens when Tyson gets inside of the reach? Pretty bad for Ali.

Yeah i agree @mike, If tyson did get inside which he was great at he would destroy Ali, but Ali was an expert at keeping people outside. But i still think Ali

The key word is IF Tyson gets inside.

I'm sorry, but Ali has the best jab in boxing history. No one's getting inside.

I agree, but Tyson was the best at getting inside
and it goes both ways, the key word is if Ali can keep Tyson outside
I think its a very tough choice, but Ali wins it i think

I think if Tyson got inside Ali would just clinch. He's good at that

And it's not like Ali has no chin, I'm pretty sure he could take as many punches from Tyson as he did versus Foreman, if not more.

I think Tyson vs. Ali would be a tough test for both guys.  I side with Ali in this one, and feel that his superior footwork, ring generalship, and counter punching would win him the fight against the shorter, more compact Tyson.  Not taking anything away from Iron Mike, in his prime he was an absolute animal, but I think the evidence is on the table -- Tyson vs. Buster Douglas, Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis.  The taller, more rangy guys with effective jabs were able to stifle him, and Ali was all that plus a defensive mastermind.  I see Ali picking him apart from his range, and finishing the fight with either a late round TKO, or UD.

On the same page, Roy Jones Jr. in his prime vs. Mike Tyson in his prime makes for an interesting match-up.  RJJ in his younger years was damn near impossible to touch, and had deceptive power in both hands.  Maybe it was his counter punching and awkward angles that made his punches difficult to see coming, but he dropped a lot of guys.  I think RJJ would either win a safe UD, or lose by knock out early.

Tyson would win. His head movement would be enough to stop most of Roy's offence.

Ali vs Tyson is a tough one. I think its one of those fights where whoever plays there game the best wins. If the fought 10 times they'd each win 5. But if it came down to it and it was just the one fight I'd put my money on Tyson. Like somebody else said earlier Ali took a lot of punishment early in his fights got his opponents tired and than dominated and Im not confident he could do that with Tyson.

I always thought mike tyson's mental problems is what made him a top fighter and also the most feared ever which alone won him many of his fights. Tyson is the only boxer in his prime that i actually feel that he tried to kill people when he threw punches.

@Trevpicks, that's actually something I neglected to bring into the equation.  Mike Tyson was a weak minded fighter, and was easily emotionally swayed.  Ali was an absolute master at the mental game, and would suck fighters into his venus fly trap by talking smack and making them respond the way he wanted them to.  Ali was intelligent enough to know which fighters fought worse when they were angry, and would bring out the worst in them with his words.  He would have done the very same thing with Tyson, and Tyson would have probably exhausted himself that much more, trying to seek revenge for the hurtful things Ali would have said about him.

Before tyson hooked up with don king mike was like the terminator, don king helped his mental state get worse and then the downfall of tyson began.

As for roy jones i loved watching him fight but he chose to stay the majority of his career in a division that had no talent even close to a world class fighter so i can't rank him up there with the best boxers.

He fought in the middleweight, light heavyweight, and one fight in the heavyweight division.  Where would you have liked Roy Jones Jr. to go that he didn't?  Cruiserweight?  When has there ever been any nameable talent in that weight class?

@LoneRonin Ali took punishment from PrimeGeorge Foreman for 8 rounds and then KOed him.

I'm pretty sure he could take whatever Mike Tyson's got for AT LEAST 12 rounds.
