Neal vs. Rakhmonov
Shavkat Rakhmonov, DEC
Geoff Neil is the toughest fighter on this card. Sucks that he had a weight cut issue. Shavkat finishes most fighters but Im still going with decision.

Jones looking like a snowman with that hard to miss gut hanging out for all to see. Here's to Gane exposing what a 3 year layoff from competition and going up in weight can do for you. Gane by hard fought decision.

stuthehistoryguyThe one very important question remains and can't be answered until he steps in the octagon tonight. Does Jones still have his athleticism? His athleticism was one of the main reasons why he was such a dangerous fighter. He hasn't been training with Mike Winkeljohn anymore since their falling out about 18 months ago. Winkeljohn was his striking coach and responsible for Jones' creative striking and range management. Which includes his kicking game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have not seen any footage of Jones throwing any kicks. I have seen a bunch of training footage of Jones these past few weeks. Which was mainly him boxing, weightlifting and throwing his training partners around. So I guess we'll see tonight if not training with Winkeljohn has had some effect on his fighting style. Personally I'm expecting a different Jones striking wise.

I'm very intrigued about this fight and really looking forward to it. I personally think this is a historical fight. If Jon wins, he'll cement himself the clear cut GOAT, especially for newer fans. If Jon loses, Ciryl will be the first figher he's losing to.

I can't wait for this card to start!

Imagine fighting an MMA fight and having a spry guy like Chris Tognoni or Herb "Should I stay or should I go" Dean the gold standard reffing your fight. That would fill you with confidence that nothing bad will happen.

i think the fight will be decided if gane can defend himself on the ground from the submissions threats +gnp of jones or not. i can see him not being able to even close the guard against jones cause gane is a white belt, but i can see gane just standing up and dgaf like derrick lewis does

Jones vs. Gane
Jon Jones, DEC
in my opinion no man who has tested positive multiple times in drug tests can be considered the GOAT in any sport, fans can argue things like roids can't give you intelligence or reflexes, but they do give you things like strength, stamina and power and faster recovery in training. Leaving that issue aside and focusing on the fight, Jones comes from a break of more than 3 years without fighting and I think that weighs heavily on any fighter, so I imagine him slower, extra-calculating and leisurely in the first 2 rounds of this title. fight. Even so, I think that the last fight between Gane vs. Francis gives a clear plan of attack for Jones: use his wrestling, control with ground and pound and look to finish with strikes from crucifix position or with the americana/kimura. Jones has always had a great command of Judo in the Octagon, perhaps the best for any athlete who does not officially have a belt in this martial art. Gane is a good striker in terms of a variety of weapons, but he doesn't have a one punch power (rather he's a demolisher with a lot of strikes). The fight can be boring from medium and long distance because they both know how to handle it or it can be more surprising in case Jones can't hold on to the HW's KO Power (another possibility). What I am sure of is that being so tall and rangy surely Win will not receive eye-pokes tonight. Prediction: Jones by decision

Shevchenko vs. Grasso
Valentina Shevchenko, SUB, R3
Alexa has been doing things well with her boxing, but I don't see Valentina being threatened by anyone in this division since the strike, the only one with a chance is a strong grappler, apparently in the initial rounds against Taila Santos and due to a takedown reversal that Jennifer Maia once did to Valentina. Prediction: Valentina by Ground and Pound or Kimura in Round 3

Neal vs. Rakhmonov
Shavkat Rakhmonov, SUB, R2
Shavkat has KO Power and Strong Grappling. I am going to give Neal the benefit of the doubt and not think that he stopped in Weight cut to have an advantage over the Kazakh, but if he lost the weight therefore in a non-self-induced way it may be synonymous with some illness or injury (also something that is a possible guess). Conclusion I think this fight shows that in sports those who are only strikers or grapplers will be fighting with only half the weapons against the new generation of fighters who work hard to refine and master both aspects of the fight. Neal is good at striking, but he fights against a good puncher who will drown him in grappling. Prediction: No disrespect to Neal but Shavkat by any way he wants in the second round.

Gamrot vs. Turner
Mateusz Gamrot, SUB, R1
Gamrot on short notice may be risking his spot, but he could deliver a big message with a dominating win. I don't end up buying Turner: he's a giant for his weight class, but at the same time he's not a weight bully because he doesn't cut hugely for lightweights, he's just an individual who makes the most of his physical somatotype: building on it and not changing to be another class of fighter (bulk on). Culibao, Medic, Mullarkey and Riddell are good wins but not in the Top 15 level. Gamrot showed some brutal grappling in the last few rounds against Tsarukyan. I think that Gamrot can win with a masterclass grappling or with a comfortable decision against a good striker but that he doesn't get much of a foot advantage over a Gamrot who in the UFC already showed that he has hands against Holtzman.

Pickett vs. Nickal
Bo Nickal, SUB, R1
Pickett says that he had no idea who Bo was until less than a week ago, that says it all I think the breakdown isn't even necessary. And more than discussing how and when Nickal is going to finish the fight, the whole topic of debate these days has been regarding his position on the main card of the event.

Brunson vs. Du Plessis
Dricus Du Plessis, TKO, R2
I don't think Brunson gets the respect as the great middleweight gatekeeper that he is (he was practically Bisping's heir in this category) and you only have to highlight who he has won and lost against to know that he literally the gazette of toll between what is elite and not in the 185 pounds. Brunson Defeats: Cannonier, Adesanya, Jacare, Whittaker and Romero (the fight against Silva does not count because the spider already had an undeniable status and because of the controversy of the ruling, as well as pre-UFC victories do not count). Wins: Till, Holland, Shahbazyan, Heinisch, Theodorou (RIP), Kelly, Uriah Hall: all of these were considered potential Top 5-10 or in the case of Dan Kelly and Elias Theodorou potential figures for the Australian and Canadian markets respectively (not the victory against Machida counts because he was already a former champion and tested veteran). Regarding the fight, I think that Du Plessis's main ability is not only his great shape and physical power, powerful striking or solid wrestling, but his self-belief: DDP can have 0 in the tank or some injury or hurt by a strike of your opponent and keep dropping bombs, taking your rivals to the ground or looking for ways to win. Brunson has gotten ahead with his wrestling lately (except against Jared where until before being finished he dominated in all aspects of the fight), but at some point (he went against Till, he went against Holland and it was only Jared who capitalized on it) his opponent manages to hurt him with a good punch or a good combination and if this happens against Dricus the RSA man will know how to capitalize on it. My prediction is that Dricus will pass the elite test and send Brunson to retirement. Hopefully the guys from South Africa make it 2-0 again as I figured Dricus deserved the spot on the main card (I put Bo's fight in the preliminary main event and Cody's fight in the Brunson vs. .PDD). But a resounding victory can be the way to even a Main Event against Paulo Costa or someone like that. P.S: I think that DDP's cardio will look better in this fight, since at least he has some medical condition or some abnormal production of lactic acid. Cardio is something that can be improved considerably with a job of several months and not an intangible characteristic for life.

Martinez vs. Saaiman
Cameron Saaiman, SUB, R2
Manaboi have bad striking defense, bad grappling defense (choked by Drako Rodriguez in DWCS) and his principal trainer is banned from the UFC, but he does possess considerable KO Power for bantamweights (8 KO's in 10 wins), due to his Part Cameron despite being young and green has shown interesting things in his fight in DWCS and in his debut (despite his illegal knee error). I see Saaiman having an abysmal advantage in the striking and grappling department and just having to be careful with Martinez's Power KO. In addition, Martinez did have a real bad weight cut and even so I can't help but lose 30% of his bag. Prediction: Cameron by what he wants from the second round.

Penne vs. Ricci
Tabatha Ricci, DEC
If Ricci wasn't submitted by any of Viana's armbar or triangle choke attempts, I think Jessica Penne has an even slimmer chance of winning considering she's not a top position fighter on the ground.

Basharat vs. Blackshear
Farid Basharat, SUB, R2
Both competent at grappling, but I think Basharat can assert himself any way he wants: or letting his hands go and looking for a submission on the ground.

Radzhabov vs. Ribovics
Loik Radzhabov, DEC
Loik is for me a very smart fighter: I've generally seen him wrestling strikers and throwing bombs against wrestlers/grapplers. As a Latin American I personally think that the fighters here generally only work striking because they eat the movie that "men throw punches and kicks and only weak boys fight on the ground" or in case of being Latin American (Brazil does not count) ''grapplers'' turn out to be one-technique spammers like Puelles against Dan Hooker. In conclusion, if Loik can avoid Ribovics' big punch or big combination in the first round, wrestlingfest is coming for a comfortable decision for Loik.

imo, jones saw in his fight against reyes that the L was a matter of time, so, he take a time just to get a final big paycheck, and after 10 years bluffing about going to 265lbs, when he thinks he's finally done, he goes up weight

Prediction Comments

Predictions: 10 of 14 Winners, 5 Perfect, 690 Points   |   Tied for 2053rd

Jones vs. Gane
Jon Jones, DEC
gonna run with the idea that the new weightclass won't really affect the fight. i feel like jon is going to lead the dance and use his distance management more effectively than ciryl can use his footwork. not sure we see too much grappling, however i'd like to.

Shevchenko vs. Grasso
Valentina Shevchenko, DEC
gonna stop overthinking this one. val keeps this where she wants it and pecks away.

Neal vs. Rakhmonov
Shavkat Rakhmonov, SUB, R2
finally we'll get to see what shavkat looks like standing against a seasoned striker, but i'm gonna ride the hype and say he can barrel inside and take geoff out of his element.

Gamrot vs. Turner
Mateusz Gamrot, DEC
i like when jalin turner surprises me because it's always in spectacular fashion. lesser grapplers have gotten turner down though so he's gonna have to catch gamrot clean early and make him respect the range if he's gonna avoid the grind.

Pickett vs. Nickal
Bo Nickal, SUB, R1
not sure jamie can get bo's respect early enough to stop the td entry and try to force a striking affair.

Garbrandt vs. Jones
Cody Garbrandt, TKO, R2
cody should honestly be able to win this purely on his wrestling ability, but we all know he's gonna fight with his ego and that cerainly gives jones a chance here. still think he's gonna be too loopy to catch cody clean and then avoid counters.

Brunson vs. Du Plessis
Dricus Du Plessis, TKO, R2
derek has a chance to balance out the dogfight if he can establish some sorta grappling presence early and get ddp's arms a little tired, but i'm not prepared to trust him to do so.

Araujo vs. Ribas
Viviane Araujo, DEC
this will be my underdog pick of the night i suppose. both girls regularly take down their opponents, but what happens if that neutralizes and they end up striking? vivi hasn't been subbed and is more familiar going to scorecards so maybe she can make use of her rare size advantage here.

Marquez vs. Barriault
Julian Marquez, TKO, R2
thinking this will be a matter of how well barriault can recover when he inevitably gets hit with something big and how much gas julian burns off in the process.

Machado Garry vs. Song
Ian Machado Garry, DEC
of all the big favorites fights on this card, this is the one i feel might be the closest. i think song is getting written off because of the layoff and coming off a ko to a fighter in max griffin that they probably wouldn't pair garry against yet. i still think that garry can use his range to win scorecards, but i think he might be avoiding big counters the whole time.

Martinez vs. Saaiman
Mana Martinez, DEC
gonna take the underdog here just because i'm not impressed with cameron's opponents thus far. mana has some nasty power and he's gonna have a size advantage. we've seen him miss weight and win before, but i gotta wonder how his gas tank will look against a 22 year old kid. also no idea how this would look on the ground.

Penne vs. Ricci
Tabatha Ricci, DEC
there's always the chance penne finds the back and eventually a sub, but ricci's ground game may be enough to neutralize penne's entries and force her to trade.

Basharat vs. Blackshear
Farid Basharat, DEC
thinking farid will have the edge in striking volume and not sure blackshear will be able to outscramble him if it hits the mat.

Radzhabov vs. Ribovics
Loik Radzhabov, DEC
guess this is everyone's underdog of the night? i could see it, but i'm probably over-invested in underdogs already (went top down this time) so i'll say loik can play the nail and not wilt.
