Alexander Volkanovski, TKO, R3
I really think that Volkanovski's KO Power and Eye of Tiger (finishing ability) is really underrated: Since December of 2019 Volkanovski has only faced the most durable fighters in his weight class: Holloway (3 times), Brian Ortega and The Korean Zombie. Against Ortega although the People remember a lot the submission attempts of Ortega (who has an excellent level of BJJ), Volkanovski also gave him a beating in striking and especially with his ground and pound he stopped Ortega in the third round, Ortega Coaches carried the body of Ortega looked like he was a corpse and by the end of the fourth round Ortega was so hurt that Herb Dean let him out in the last round when he was clearly in no condition to fight. Volkanovski put an impressive beating on The Korean Zombie, the reason why Alex didn't knock him out earlier in the fight is because of Jung's incredible absorption and because he fought him with respect knowing that he had him completely dominated. Volkanovski also put a beatdown over Holloway in the third fight leaving him at times even in a Gaethje vs. Ferguson last rounds-like zone for few moments. The perfect example of Volkanovski's Finishing Ability is his second round against Mendes where after being knocked down Alex stood up hurting Chad with his hands and did not stop throwing punches until he got the knockdown and finished the fight.
Volkanovski's evolution in striking since 2020 is undeniable. At lightweight as a profesional fighter he has a record of 5-0 with 3 KO's and 2 SUBs, as a welterweight he has 4-1 and 3 KO's wins. There are fighters who increase in KO Power when they go. up in weight class or who lose it when they go down in weight class. A Volkanovski who will have a higher walk-in weoght for this fight and who has improved his striking considerably compared to his Pre-UFC era will be considerably more dangerous fighting at lightweight.
Obviously Islam Makhachev is not an easy target to hit and clearly his plan is to wrestling and avoid trading strikes. But Volk was a national level Wrestling champion in 201 (prior to passing through rugby), thinking that his TDD will be void is somewhat illogical, everything will depend on how hard Volkanovski works in the defense of chain wrestling and how to get up if he taken to the ground (smething in which he already showed effectiveness against Mendes, who despite taking him to the ground 3 times could only control him for 45 seconds). In my opinion Volkanovski is going to carry a lot more KO Power in his punches as he moves up in weight and Islam doesn't have the inhumane absorption of strikes that characterize Ortega, Jung and Holloway. The real danger for Alex is that he will have no answer in the scrambles if he is taken to the ground (where Islam can impose his technique and physical power), but even in a decision, if Alex defends the takedowns signficanlty and the pass more time in striking, Volk has the advantage: Makhachev striking is rrally good compared to Khabib's, but if you compare it to Alex's, Volkanovski has the same hypothetical advantage in the standing fight in the way that Islam has the advantage on the ground.
