The site will be going down this morning for some server migrations. Hoping to keep it under 30 minutes if things go smoothly. Sorry in advance!

Part 2 of this is coming up in a few minutes. Hopefully just 20 minutes of downtime for the website.

Part 3 (and hopefully final part) of the work we've been doing is coming up shortly. Hopefully just 20 minutes or so where Tapology is unavailable.

Is that why clicking the left arrow on the METHOD box now cycles "KO/TKO, Submission, Decision" instead of rotating backwards from "Decision"? It's a minor quirk, but I'm wondering if it was on purpose or not.

@nem0 no, that's just a coincidence. there was a website update to modify a few things on the picks page. but that had nothing to do with the maintenance / downtime. normal website updates do not require downtime.

Sorry to hear that @stu.
Very smooth over here. We could have tried to do all of this work with zero downtime, but that would have made it dramatically more complex. By taking the website down here and there for 30 minutes at a time over the past few weeks, it allowed the sequence of steps to be simplified.

@Greg were there some server upgrades as part of this migration? The site works flawlessly for me except for UFC weekends when there's a bunch of people posting simultaneously.

The primary thing that happened yesterday was all of the tapology servers were moved from one datacenter to a different datacenter. Or more specifically, all the servers in the old datacenter were turned off, and all the new servers were turned on. The new datacenter has more varieties of hardware and services that we can choose from, so it should be a better long-term location for us.
Somewhat related but somewhat unrelated to the datacenter move, is we also added some more capacity to one of the parts of the server infrastructure. The idea is to try and eliminate the slowness or downtime that can take place on busy fight nights.

14, plus some serverless stuff. for example all the images are hosted in Amazon S3, as opposed to on a server that we configure ourselves. it could alternatively be done on a smaller number of more powerful servers, but we tend to use a somewhat larger number of less powerful servers instead.

Makes sense. More stable, probably more cost-effective/ can run different OS's etc and it's easier to deal with problems on the fly.
Last time I checked, Facebook had allegedly surpassed 100K. Imagine how much energy that **** is burning every day to fuel people's desire to post images of their salads and complain about TV series.

I don't really understand any of this but it's certainly interesting. Funny thing is my brother is an IT technician and he's forever rambling on about servers and whatnot but the way he explains things is just so dull that I've never learnt much from him. That and he doesn't even attempt to dumb down what he's saying or put it in layman's terms. Or maybe I'm just ********. Probably a mix of all 3!

Also, on my PC I've never really had any issues with busy UFC cards. The only time I can recall it happening is a few times on the massive cards. I think the last time I got that "Oops" screen was on the McGregor VS Poirier 3 night.

@Greg I have to wonder how many of those things are dedicated to caching just absolute, toxic and/or meaningless ********. Videos of ****eyed cats and people snorting curry powder or whatever. What's the point of it all, really?
Your business is better purely because on the basis that it isn't destroying the fabric of civilisation for profit, really. It also has a fundamental point to its existence.
