I don't think Mir will have a choice.  His takedowns have never been strong, and he may not even want to go to the ground with Nelson.  Nelson's a high level blackbelt himself, and has the added advantage of the Moon Belly.  While it doesn't really mean anything today, Nelson did outpoint Mir in a grappling contest years ago, so it should at least be competitive on the ground.

This is a tough fight to pick, Mir displayed poor takedown ability in his last fight and obviously big country will be just as tough if not tougher to take down than Cro Cop, plus even if Mir gets the fight to the mat Nelson still will have an advantage. Mir really has no choice but to strike with nelson, and i think that Mir is fast enough and has good enough technique to win this fight on the feet. Mir is generally a smart fighter so I think he will find a way to win this fight.

this WILL be laughed at by virtually all of yall, but i believe big country will SUBMIT mir!!! i say that because nelson can takedown mir, and pass his guard...from there, nelson is harder to get off u then lesnar, and we know how that ended for mir....anyway, i see mir getting caught in an armbar/kimura and tapping

unlikely it ends that way @jersey but the part i agree with is if big country gets on top of you, you might not get him back off again.  that black belt ain't just for keeping his pants up.  well, actually yeah maybe it is mostly for keeping his pants up.  but with a center of gravity like his he can crucifix and pound out just about anybody the way he did to kimbo.

@Jeremy I know it was just an example but I have to point out Frank Mir has a black belt in BJJ while Kimbo was just a youtube sensation that was given with no real MMA training until his early 30's; so you can't compare a UFC champ with a backyard brawler.

Mir would need to get tired as crap and beat up before he got subbed like that.  He is no joke with his grappling. But I guess he could get tired as crap and beat up, so ok.

that's fair @yankees and like you said i was just making the point that big country is hard to get off of you.  the referee standup in nelson vs. arlovski is still one of the worst i've seen - arlovski showed no ability to get out from under big country either. arlovski is no mir on the ground but he's experienced in sambo and certainly better than kimbo.

Big Country is definitely hard to get off you, and Mir knows that first hand. Nelson beat Mir in a grappling match IIRC, but he didn't submit him. I think if this fight hits the floor Nelson will be on top, but I don't think he'll submit or finish Mir.

Yankee Roy completely dominated Mir in grappling match before. Roy been a black belt much longer then Mir and likely still posses a significant edge in grappling

Should be entertaining. I think the safe money bet is Mir, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a Split Decision in this one.

I say mir.  Hes bigger, faster, and better at everything.  Im hoping for a good fight.  I really like both guys but ive been a mir fan longer and i think mir needs the win more than nelson.
At the same time roy taking this wouldnt be a surprise, i just dont think its likely.

I think Mir takes this one. He has more technical striking and i hope he uses his leg kicks early to take some power out of Big Country's big right hand. Unless Roy takes it to the ground in top control, i don't see him winning. I wish Mir would've kept some size though, he doesn't need to weight 280, but i think he looked better fighting with some muscles around 260.

@bklettke, Exactly right frank in the 255-260 range should be perfect.  When he came out for kongo.
He maintains speed, gains tons of power, and his stamina got a lot better!! Its a triple win for him.  
As for the roy on top, roy has decent top game and is heavy, but thats underrating franks bottom game which is pretty much what made him a champion and win the fights where he was an underdog.
