Alright folks,

As you might know I'm Tapology Boxing editor. I know the majority of you guys are here for MMA, so was I originally. But for the last year or 2 there is a little more interest in Boxing on the site.

So here's a place to talk boxing.

Classic Welterweight KOs

the big Welterweight Title fight this weekend between Bud Crawford and Shawn Porter, Top Rank have just uploaded a video with classic Welterweight KO's from the past. Some real brutal ones here, a couple from Bud himself.
By the way Bud gets another KO this weekend!!!

Donald Curry

that KO vid and seen a nice Donald Curry KO reminded me of a video I was going to post here.
It's another from Rich the Fight Historian(I'm honestly loving going through his channel!)
Anyway, I wasn't too aware of Donald Curry until recently, since I've been diving back into my boxing history. Curry was just a little bit before my time, but he was ranked as the no. 1 P4P Boxer in the mid 80's. A tall, skinny, rangy boxer who could punch. Another interesting story for anyone interested in boxing history and maybe finding out about a guy you might never heard of who was P4P not too long ago, has a little bit of a tragic story (I won't give anything away!)

Greatest Welterweight Fight of All Time

KO vid also reminded me of this fight. In my opinion it is the Greatest Welterweight Fight of all time. It was a unification between, at the time, the clear top 2, there was only a WBC and WBA at that time (oh how I wish it was still!), then you have the fact that both these guys went on to become top 20 all timers(Leonard maybe top 10?) and of course the fight. The fight was fantastic, highly skilled, technical but also violent, hard punching. Also the classic "You're blowing it kid" line from Angelo Dundee.

Well worth a look if you've never seen it before

@Mikey1903

If I remember correctly, that fight was scheduled for 15 rounds.  I wish all boxing championship fights were still 15 rounds.

Yes Tepid, that's correct. 15 rounds, I'm not so sure about bringing back 15 rounds. A big reason they got rid of 15 rounds was safety. A lot of damage was done in those 13,14,15th rounds, some fatal.  Being very tired and extremely dehydrated is a recipe for disaster

Don't get me wrong, sometimes I watch a great fight and I'm thinking "I wish there was another 3 rounds" but also there is many times when an extra 3 rounds would be torture!!! Ha

Who do you guys think would benefit from a 15 round boxing match? I reckon somebody like Usyk would get wayyyy more ko/tkos if they ever brought that back.

@Mikey1903

From my rough understanding of it, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini's fatal win over Duk Koo Kim was one of the main reasons fights changed to 12 rounds.

Masamichi Yabuki pulled off a massive upset when he defeated Kenshiro Teraji and became the new WBC Light Flyweight Champion. He was as high as a 15-to-1 underdog on some books. They've now agreed to rematch in the spring. Teraji is still my boy!

Some interesting drama is unfolding in the boxing world surrounding Canelo Alvarez. With the creation of the Bridgerweight class, so far only recognized by the WBC, the WBC has introduced a new weight limit for Cruiserweight, 190lbs(86kgs). This has made the WBC belt a lot more attainable for people in the lower weight classes and since it hasn't gone into effect yet there's a potential it can affect the performance of their Champion who's only ever fought at the 200lb(90kg) limit.

Enter Canelo who had requested the WBC set up the fight with said Cruiserweight Champion, Ilunga Makabu. The WBC almost immediately granted him his request. Stars have aligned to make this happen it seems.

Excuse me ***?? Canelo wants to fight a cruiserweight? What's the highest weight he's fought at?

168lbs but that's on the scales. His current walk around weight is probably closer to 175-180.

He fought at Light Heavyweight once I'm sure? I may be mistaken.

I forgot his Kovalev fight was at LHW. He came a little under though so I wonder if he dehydrated at all for the fight.

Call me crazy but that sounds like a bad idea. Never watched Makabu fight but his record seems fairly elite too me (at least he doesn't look like a can crusher) and I assume he would be the harder puncher as well. Didn't Kovalev give Canelo a tough time?

Ilunga Makabu? I think he's quite good myself but maybe I DKSAB. The fight is suppose to happen in May next year, and if the contract has a hydration clause plus the fact it's in a completely foreign weight class for him I'd say the deck is stacked in Canelo's favor.

@Cheeseball

I'd have to watch the fight again to gauge how it was really going but Canelo won by a late KO I think.

Kovalev did well to keep Canelo at the end of his jab but never mounted his own offense well. Ended up getting trapped against the ropes with his head doing a 180 before hitting the canvas like a folding chair.

Makabu is DANGEROUS!!

has a habit of travelling to deepest Russia and KTFOing big punchers and silencing crowds!!

This fight here was pretty wild. At the time Kudryashov was thought of as a real dangerous guy, turned out he's a glass cannon, but this was a good win at the time
