Alright folks,

As you might know I'm Tapology Boxing editor. I know the majority of you guys are here for MMA, so was I originally. But for the last year or 2 there is a little more interest in Boxing on the site.

So here's a place to talk boxing.

Mikey how would you rate 2021 so far with fights, matchmaking, etc.? Feels like so much as happened in this year alone versus other years, but maybe that's just my recency bias kicking in.

Erm, it's been alright. Canelo unifying 168lbs in under 12 months has been great. Also the 2 huge Heavyweight fights were big, an all time Brawl and an underdog (shouldn't have been!) going into away territory and beating the reigning Champion both great.

There's still a lot of inactivity, cherry picking and the best not facing each other. The fact that Teofimo, Garcia, Haney, Tank all have 2 fights between them this year and do more fighting on Twitter drives me mad!  My teeth grind anytime I hear them compared to the 4 Kings!!!  Get to **** with that ****!!!!
I also think that the fact that 2020 was decimated makes this year feel bigger and better than it is.

Still, it's not all doom and gloom. I know people love to say boxing is dead but it's not. There is a tonne of talent, the new trend of unifying divisions is great, big fights do happen (not enough). Fury Wilder 3 proved that big boxing still captivates like few things.

Tank's Broner v2, another Mayweather hype job. The minute he actually steps into the ring with a proper Boxer he's going to sleep. Sucks we lost some fights if Manny-Spence Jr happened it would've set up Crawford-Spence unified fight. Same with Casimero-Donaire instead we got one of the single most boring fights of the year and really questionable scorecards, and we're not any closer to seeing Naoya be the unified Champion.

Really? Imo Tank's nothing like Broner he keeps quiet and fights frequently. Plus he's way more active then the other guys Mikey listed. Obviously I'm not a fan of the hit and run stuff but I would say he's the one out of that group that I'm least annoyed of.

He's way more active but much worse than Teo and I'd favor Haney over Tank if they did fight. He's a hype job in the sense they call him a multiple division Champion but his WBA belts are not primary belts, he held two WBA regular belts, the WBA Super belt is. He's been jumping weight classes picking up paper belts and Mayweather promotion is using that to say he's a 3 division world champ when in reality he's only held belts in one weight class; Super Featherweight.

Mayweather Promotion did this exact same thing with Broner, had him jump around weight classes picking up weaker belts and promoting him as this big 4 division Champion when in reality he never actual fought the best in any of the weight classes till he was sidelined by a resurging Maidana.

Eh that's more the promotions fault then Tank's they're trying to get ppv buys. I actually favor Tank to stop Haney in the later rounds after probably being down on the cards. I haven't trained or anything so you can take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Big Upsets in Sheffield

anyone missed it last night, it was on at the same time as the UFC. 2 big upsets in World Title fights last night.
Terri Harper losing wasn't a huge Upset but you would have a hard time finding any person who thought there'd be a 1 punch KO finish!!!

Speaking of KO finishes. Wee Kiko Martinez pulled off the upset of the Year in absolutely pasting Kid Galahad as an over 10 to 1 underdog.
Couldn't have happened to 2 better people. Kid losing because he's a bit of a prick, drug cheat and known bully(he's been caught on film)
Kiko winning because he's a true veteran, always the away fighter, completely written off.

It'll be interesting to see if this is the start of Kid Galahad's decent into journeyman territory. Maybe a few years from now he'll be fighting on Italian cards and getting robbed as the away fighter lol.

Didn't he have a really good performance the fight before this one? I remember watching his post fight interview and everyone was praising him. That could just be your average promoters hyperbole though.

No, he's not going to turn into a journeyman!  He's almost certainly rematching Kiko, will beat him by avoiding all offense and going back to his 1 punch and hug style. He'll get a big fight, maybe against Navarrete, as was the original plan, get the absolute dog **** beaten out of him! Then he'll retire.  He may get KO'd by Kiko again that'll only speed up the retirement. But even after that KO I'd still pick him in the rematch .
Saying all that, what do I know??? After that KO Who knows what is going to happen???

@Cheeseball

From what I've seen he's good but not really world title level.

And yes he did just have a great performance. He absolutely took Jazza ****ens to school and systematically beat him down. That's a big reason why he was such a huge favourite vs Kiko

Stephen, what do you mean not World Title level? He was a World Champion 2 days ago? Haha.
As much as I don't like him, he was top 5 Featherweight in the world for the past few years

He's not P4P level if that's what you meant , but he was definitely World level

@Mikey1903

I never really rated him that high tbh but then again I've only seen a handful of his fights. Just my impression from those fights was that he was a solid fighter but nothing special. As you said Emanuel Navarrete would've destroyed him and I recon Gervonta Davis, Carl Frampton, Josh Warrington and Leo Santa Cruz would've also outclassed him and possibly a few others on a good day. Martinez is one of those who happened to have a good day last night.

EDIT: Just checked their records and remembered that Warrington already did beat Galahad.

Carl Frampton retired.

*Misread, thought Stephan meant potential fights that can happen. Would've liked to see Frampton vs Galahad.

Yeah but did you actually watch the Galahad Warrington fight??? Don't think you have, lucky you by the way it was ****e!!!
But most people thought Galahad won that fight and only lost because it was in a stadium full of Warrington fans and he was the away fighter. Things that shouldn't count but they do. Because it was such a **** fight nobody really brings up robbery but Galahad won.
Tank is 2 weight classes above and Santa Cruz and Frampton were P4P boxers of the decade so not being able to beat them isn't exactly mean you're not World class. I'd actually maybe favour him over both depending on when they fought, in the last few years he'd beaten them both, Frampton easily, 5 to 10 years ago they'd be favourites
What are you doing to me Stephen. You have me defending Kid fookin Galahad here with your nonsense!!! Haha

Fight purses

Anyway, enough of defending Kid Galahad!!!!

I just found out the disclosed fight purses for the Golden Boy Promotions card last night headlined by Munguia and Rosado.
Jaime Munguia received 1.15 million dollars, Rosado 600k. Considering Munguia is a fringe contender making more than a UFC champion and Rosado is a 13 loss veteran making more than any female champion disclosed pay. Interesting. Especially after Dana's rant the other week on Oscar de la Hoya paying his boxers.

Saying that the highest pay on the main card was 75k, the rest made between 15 and 25k.

The  prelim boxers made between 5k and 1.5k!!!

I think a lot of people miss out on that info when comparing UFC and boxing pay. Yes the main event fighters make more in boxing but boxing undercards are lucky to make 5k. I think UFC has a better mid tier and probably overall they make more. But the very top boxers make way more

Any thoughts???

@Mikey1903

You've got to understand that when I fade or dislike someone, I fade them HARD! There are a few exceptions where I'll admit that a boxer I don't like is good but they have to be exceptional for that. The same way I hate Idris Virgo as he seems like a complete tool who'd stab his own gran over a dispute regarding the number the number of Snickers that were in the celebrations box before and after his visit. Even if he unifies several weight classes, I'd still only rate him as a halfway decent British level boxer.
