@JPosadas

Mine's still at the absolute basics. I've not really gotten into Sumo the same way I have with MMA or Boxing but this thread has given me a greater appreciation for the skill involved and I watch the highlights but simply because it's entertaining to watch. I'm probably the most casual Sumo fan in the world lol!

Trust me once you get more used to watching the sport and start figuring out who your favorites are you'll pick up on the names real fast. Also if your too overwhelmed by Juryo and Maku****a I would recommend just focusing on Makuuchi as that's where the best of the best compete. Think of Juryo as the undercard / early main card of a fight night and Maku****a as a LFA or Cage Warriors card.

@Cheeseball

Yeah there's still loads that confuse me about the sport but I'm enjoying watching it. I may not know my Juryo's from my Makuuchi's but I do know that watching 2 big men trying to floor each other is entertaining to watch!

Interesting video about sumo match fixing.

Disgraced former rikishi Takagenji (twin brother of Rizin fighter/ also disgraced former rikishi, Tsuyoshi Sudario) gives his opinion on who is and isn't fixing sumo matches.

I have a whole bunch of resources listed on how to watch on the first page. Its a little outdated so I need to update it at some point. Anyways if you want to watch live Karla Somoist and Mbovosumo (now called Classic Sumo) are the best. For vods I would say Natto Sumo and Kintamayama are the best. Mbovosumo and Kintamayama are in English and Karla Somoist and Natto Sumo are in Japanese.

TLDR: Best for live sumo Mbovosumo (For English) Karla Somoist (For Japanese)

            Best for vods   Kintamayama (For English) Natto Sumo (For Japanese)

Vod stands for video on demand. Maybe a better way to state it would be live (Mbovosumo and Karla) vs non live (Natto and Kintamayama)

I made my picks but I just went with the ones with the shorter names for most of them. Still a complete casual.

@Cheeseball

Not really tbh. Most of my favourite MMA fighters or boxers are based a lot on what they're like outside of the cage/ring as well but with all the Japanese tradition, there doesn't really seem to be a lot of room for individuality (I've never seen a trash talking sumo wrestler with a hohawk, covered in tattoos for instance). I think could be partly why.

Really? One of the reasons I like Sumo so much is because rikishi are distinct. Just look at somebody like Ura he has a bright pink mawashi and he likes to do risky throws. Takakiesho is a tank, Terunofuji is calm, and Hakuho was ridiculously op.

Could just be that I've missed a lot of that. Or maybe my brain is just struggling to comprehend sumo because of how different it is to other combat sports.

My picks. I'm well and truly on the Takakeisho train now (partly because I love him, and partly because I couldn't draft Teru for my fantasy sumo league so now I have to hope he does well)

@Cheeseball do you know all the Sumo fighters who have fought in MMA? Could you name a few?

Yes I can! Three off the top of my head. Tsuyoshi Sudario a former rikishi who currently fights in Rizen. Famed yokozuna Akebono whose fought the likes of Royce Gracie, Don Frye, Hong Man Choi, and Bob Sapp. Lastly probably the most well known former rikishi turned MMA fighter Teila Tuli who was 1/2 of the first UFC match ever.

Baruto, the former Estonian ozeki fought in the Rizin 2016 Grand Prix. He got KOd by Cro Cop in the semifinals and almost fought Jiri Prochazka (unfortunately Jiri got injured so he had to withdraw)
