The offspring of hippos once owned by Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar can be recognized as people or “interested persons” with legal rights in the U.S. following a federal court order.

The case involves a lawsuit against the Colombian government over whether to kill or sterilize the hippos whose numbers are growing at a fast pace and pose a threat to biodiversity.

An animal rights groups is hailing the order as a milestone victory in the long sought efforts to sway the U.S. justice system to grant animals personhood status. But the order won't carry any weight in Colombia where the hippos live, a legal expert said.

“The ruling has no impact in Colombia because they only have an impact within their own territories. It will be the Colombian authorities who decide what to do with the hippos and not the American ones,” said Camilo Burbano Cifuentes, a criminal law professor at the Universidad Externado de Colombia.

The “cocaine hippos” are descendants of animals that Escobar illegally imported to his Colombian ranch in the 1980s when he reigned over the country's drug trade. After his death in a 1993 shootout with authorities, the hippos were abandoned at the estate and left to thrive with no natural predators — their numbers have increased in the last eight years from 35 to somewhere between 65 and 80.

The dilemma is hilarious to me, the government want the Hippos gone as they destroy the environment, kill or scare away local wildlife and scare away tourists. Yet the locals see them as mascots and refuse to let them be killed.

Is there that many of those Cocaine Hippos now??!!!!  Damn, that is a lot actually. Especially Hippos, who eat a LOT are extremely territorial and even more violent!!!!  They are responsible for more human deaths than any other animal. They don't kill for food either they are just violent bastards!!!! 

And to think they only started off as 1 male and 3 female, not sure if i'm happy or disappointed they're not hills have eyes hippos

It's a bit of a clickbait title, really. Carpet didn't match the curtains . I was expecting it to be about tweaker Hippos, and how they no longer have to suck **** behind the sonic burger dumpster to support their habits since they've been made citizens and thus qualify for subsidised rehab.

One country says random animal has same rights as people in another country. Tomorrow Egypt says crows have the same rights as people in the US. The US says no they don't. You can't just decide other countries laws.

That's how this ridiculous article sounds to me. I think it's more a poke at left extremism and their mental disorders and justifiably so.

Also I thought there would be hundreds or thousands of hippo's. 65-80 is disappointing.

Also wanted a hippo raging on cocaine.

No **** Sherlock. Cormier's point is that, in his opinion, Fedor wouldn't have performed well in the the UFC during the time the UFC tried to sign him (2009 to 2011) because he wasn't in his prime. As I've said before I love the weasels post fight breakdowns but he jumps to conclusions wayyy to fast.

Cheeseball I'm confused, they're not agreeing at all? This Weasle guy is arguing that Fedor would've been top three in the Heavyweight division if they signed him and could've became Heavyweight Champion if he got to fight Lesnar before Cain. He even started arguing that shot and over the hill Fedor had a chance at beating Cain(lol). 

As per what people were saying about the US heading for a political crisis, the politicians know what they are doing. They now know they can get away with just about everything.  Its the true believers in politicians that really bother me.  

I've joined MMA Community far too late to argue whether Fedor is legit goat or even in top5, but what I know is that he did not compete with the best.

I'm more and more sceptical when it comes to GOAT talks, I actually do not see anyone being much better than rest to call him the greatest. If I had to go with anyone I would take GSP
