Sometimes odds don't make much sense when it comes to matchmaking. Ilima-Lei Macfarlane has been a dominant champion, passing her opponents over with takedowns and submissions. Velasquez is chosen as a favorite because she is considered a "strong judoka" and they believe that if she keeps the fight standing, she could capitalize on the level of striking. I think (like most) Macfarlane will get the takedown in the first round and wear Velasquez down to a late finish in the fight. She has a cardio advantage from indoor pool workouts and having fought 5 times to 5 rounds already. Instead, the challenger will face a fight for the first time beyond 3 rounds.

At least it doesn't end up in a boring awkward pushing/groping match like grecco roman.
You gotta have it all to be really good and balance each skill for each match.
Also in WMMA they often lack the upper body control for other types of grappling.

Like everyone else I am surprised that Velasquez is the favourite over the long reigning Champ?? I have been impressed with Velasquez, as impressed as you can with wins over Bruna Ellen and Kristina Williams!!! I'm guessing the Bookies don't think macfarlane can get this to the ground and Velasquez wins the stand up? My original pick was going to be Velasquez but the fact Macfarlane is the underdog makes me wanna pick her!

Man. This is a toughy for me. I really like Macfarlane. Really do like her. As a fighter and a person. But Velasquez, stylistically, is a problem. A big problem. And Ilima-Lei knows it. She even admitted to this being her toughest test to date. She's never faced anyone like Velasquez who's a southpaw and likes to stand and bang. As she said. I would give Velasquez the edge in a buncha spots. She's stronger, more explosive and powerful, she's a way better striker, and she's got the size diff on her side as well. I don't feel good about this, but I'm gonna side with Velasquez on this one. She could very well fade in the champ rounds from trying to put Ilima-Lei away in the earlier rounds, leaving her more likely to get submitted. But we'll see tonite somehow.
