Here's how I look at that fight:

Poirier just fought a very close back and forth scrap with hooker.

Is Hooker a more dangerous striker than Tony? No. A better wrestler? No. Better sub threat? **** no. Better chin? Not that either. Better cardio? That's a negative. Better pressure? Niet.

Tony is a straight up far better version of Hooker in every department. Tony is constantly the stuff that hooker did in spurts that caused poirier problems.

I do not think Poirier beats him. 85% confidence in that prediction.

I definitely think Tony would be a harder fight for Poirier, sometimes Hooker is far too predictable and he's been made to pay for that a few times now, but if there's anything Tony normally isn't, it's predictable. Nevertheless I still think Dustin has the skills on the feet to beat Tony and enough experience on the ground that he would be able to fend off any sub attempts.

I'd like to weigh in. I say Dustin beats Tony. And it's very hard for me to say that against Tony. "Poor ******* guy" is the caption of Tony's career

Poirier vs Tony does make a lot of sense.  Gaethje make Tony look slow but let’s not forget his run to that fight through many obstacles (COVID/date and opposition changes/two weight cuts in short time/ extended training at his age)

It’s an interesting fight. On paper I agree with everything Fish said as far as comparisons. That said, Poirier is a hard guy to count out.  He’s got good crisp boxing with solid hand speed and accuracy.

I love the fight.

Why not chime in too!!!!
IMO, Poirier punches Tony's face in!!!!! That's my breakdown!!!!
Ferguson has some of the worst striking defence you'll ever see in a high level fighter.  Seems backwards saying that a high level fighter has terrible striking but he does. Justin Gaethje lighting him up wasn't some out of the blue development either. He's been taking clean shots for years. Now he's a cardio machine, likely top 3 cardio on any fighter. Poirier is a legit 5 round fighter himself nowadays. Poirier could only give that fight away by jumping on guillotines!!!
I don't imagine Ferguson shooting takedowns all of a sudden, maybe an Imanari???!!!!.
Yeah, Poirier punches his face in!!!

Haha. Great post, Mikey. That doesn’t make Fish’s Hooker/To y comparisons wrong. It does bring more intangibles/question/factions to the table. This is a reason I don’t count Poirier out. I’m not convinced Tony’s durability and offense is enough knowing his lack of defense. Like I said, DP got good speed, accurate striking and is very well rounded. I’m not dead set either way. I think it’s a close fight and tough to call.

tony wins that fight unless his chin is gone which is entirely possible after the gaethje fight

So what's the verdict for fight of the year? Poirier vs. Hooker or Zhang vs. Joanna?
I gotta go with Poirier vs. Hooker personally, although if there's any criticism to make it's definitely that it was missing an alien.

i'd say zhang/jj or dustin/dan. its a 50-50 call at this point. justin/tony was pretty much a one sided beat down. other than the flash knock down at the end of  2nd tony had very few moments in that fight.

Felder vs Hooker was excellent as well but I’d give the edge to the Poirier fight cause he was able to stuff the late stalling attempts by Hooker.

That said, JJ/Zhang might edge then both out. I’d have to watch things again honestly.
