Now of course water loading & depletion effects the brain and muscles, which effect cardio. 100%. There's Circulation, blood-pressure, dried up organs etc.
IMO its all about oxygen. Specially oxygen-intake. Can you breathe after 10 minutes of fighting? If so, how hard are you breathing? Without the finishes & bad-judging, the fighter with better cardio would win every single time.
Same with marathons. If you take out all the independent variables you're left with a competition of who can do something the longest. Which stems from cardio.
and specific cardio training translates brilliantly in MMA. Khabib can wrestle for 30 minutes straight because he trains by wrestling for 30 minutes straight. Boxers can win 12 round fights because they train for 12 rounds. So my point is if you're training for 15 minutes of MMA.. besides getting rendered unconscious or a terrible scorecard, nothing should be able to stop you. Including the health of your brains & organs.
