@fish. That’s pretty crazy. At work alone, I have 6 guys, off the top of my head, with wrestling backgrounds. One kids beaten Austin DeSantos and quit in HS. His pop and uncle were D1 National Champions. It’s not the first spot I’ve worked like that, with a ton of other wrestlers. I live in PA though..even though it’s the Philly area, wrestling is kinda big and just getting bigger, which is awesome.
@Bruce. It’s definitely more challenging to be able to hold someone down and control them. Another reason is in a wrestling match you can’t just back up or you’ll get stalling points and eventually get DQd. You have to engage and try to stay center. MMA you can back peddle circle and counter. Which is smart. You really need to learn to mix in your striking with takedown along with being persistent and CHAIN WRESTLE to be successful at the upper level.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, right now even... IMO the undervalued American folk style wrestling transitions best into mma because of the amount of time spend in the ground riding and escaping excellent backpacking wrestlers. Obviously they need to lose some tendencies and learn some sub D. Freestyle is great also as it does spend more time in the ground than Greco and has the wide diversity in takedowns with turning people.
