I recently interviewed Ashley Cummins, Amber Brown and Katie Saull on them calling for the UFC to introduce an atomweight division, and wanted to share it with you guys and spark discussion.

http://mmasucka.com/2018/03/23/the-rallying-cry-for-a-ufc-atomweight-division/

Do you think the UFC can successfully implement atomweight?

And if so, who would you like to see compete in it? I'm working on a complementary "What a UFC Atomweight Division Could Look Like" article and would definitely consider some suggestions made here.

And who are some UFC strawweights you think would be able to cut down to 105?

No thanks, the 115ers barely have any power or finish fights as it is

An atomweight division would do better than the non-existent featherweight division we have right now, so I'm all for it

One female division doesn't work so therefore a midget weight class would? Flawed logic there^

I'm not really interested. Atomweight just doesn't have much going on at the moment, and UFC already cut Seo Hee Ham for losing robberies & Waterson is at 115 and IDK if she'd go back.

There is definitely enough talent for this division to be in the UFC.  I'm all for it.  If they had to eliminate the female 145 division to make it work, that would be fine with me.

I'd say give it a year or two. Let Invicta really build it up, possibly create some name recognition with a fighter or two. Then I'd be interested in perhaps seeing the UFC add the division. Not sure I see enough interest or fighters developed for it quite yet.

The UFC have enough on their plate as it is by trying to sell Men's and Women's Flyweight to fans.  Now they are going to add Women's Atomweight...just because?  I say once they actually make those divisions matter, as well as make UFC belts in general mean something again, keep Women's Atomweight on the back burner.

But knowing Dana and how he wants to continue to beat the dead horse that is The Ultimate Fighter, he's gonna hamfist in an Atomweight TUF, because UFC gonna UFC.

I think it becomes far more likely once Cyborg leaves the UFC and the organization disbands W145, if it doesn't happen sometime before then. It's honestly a much more competitive division than W145.

And if you enjoyed Rizin's atomweight tournament, you'd probably enjoy the top 105'ers from the world competing against one another. Food for thought.

@dtrain

Then they are going to have to wait a long while then, because there is no way in hell they are dissolving Women's featherweight while Cyborg is still capable of fighting.  She is a draw for them and they don't want to let anyone who is capable of drawing anything worth a damn go to Bellator or any new org that could pose a threat like RIZIN or ACB.  And yes I loved the RIZIN Super Atomweight tourney.  The problem isn't the division or the fighters that fight at Women's Atomweight. It's the piss poor match making and management of talent that the UFC has had in recent years thanks to Dana White and Endeavor.  Rather than pit the best against the best, the UFC now just want to make one off match ups like boxing that end up damaging the health of the sport in the long term.

Edit:  It is this, coupled with the rapid addition of divisions since the merger with WEC in 2010, as well as the non-stop continuous bloating of the roster resulting from the FOX deal and the dissolution of many big promotions of the time like DREAM, World Victory Road, and Strikeforce around the time between 2011-2012 that has resulted in the position the UFC have backed themselves into.  A comically big roster with many fighters that, with all due respect to the fighters, don't always stand out that WME-IMG/Endeavor cherry picks who to push that causes many to act like cringe inducing, discount versions of McGregor or Mayweather to stay relevant.

Yeah. I agree. And I know this is BEST case scenario, but if the UFC actually went out and bought some of the top ladies in the division over from Asia, atomweight could be a lot of fun. But, it's a moot point, as the UFC probably won't make that effort, sadly.

The problem with atomweight is that it won't draw. It will draw less than Flyweight.

WMMA doesn't really draw either TBH. Sometimes you get a Rousey, but her celebrity wasn't really just about her fighting ability. People liked her for other reasons. I mean if Nunes can't make it work after smashing everyone to pieces then I don't know who can.

And now that she's wrecked the borg there's not much doing in WMMA. Schevchenko vs eye? ugh. Eye has about as much chance in that one as Mcgregor did against Floyd. Pretty sure Andrade will beat Rose, and she'll be hated as much or more than Nunes for whatever reason and won't draw as a champ.

WMMA just isn't as good. Never has been, never will be. Every so often you get a girl who pushes the action and has skill like Nunes, but for every one of those there's 50 antonina schevchenkos and pudilovas.

You guys are sexist. You hold the women to a higher standard then the men.
Remember Ngannou vs lewis or a bunch of other **** heavyweight matchs that have to big idiots tired after 30 secounds who do nothing for three rounds? Should we erase the whole division? No of course not.
Stop hating on the women.  Karate hottie was an atomweight and she'd whoop lewis' fat ass.

I'm definitely sexist. Guilty as charged. If believing that men are generally better at fighting than women is a crime, then I am guilty of that crime. It's not that I'm inherently biased against the ladies, it's just that they so rarely ever deliver exciting fights. 7/10 WMMA are battles of ish-ish that go to decision. They're just rarely ever exciting.

Lewis vs Ngannou was about the worst HW fight I've ever seen anywhere, but most HW fights are slobberknockers. The prevalence of boring fights in HW is not comparable to that of WMMA.

Also Karate hottie is a better fighter than lewis but let's be real, he'd put her on a sandwich.
