So this is the Strikeforce Grand Prix 2.0 essentially? With only 5 guys who actually fight at HW regularly in King Mo, Fedor, Mitrione, Mir, and Nelson? And they put a middleweight into the tournament in Chael? As well as the LHW champion Bader? And they left out a lot of Heavyweights like Kharitonov and Kongo? *sigh*

I want to be optimistic but this has dumpster fire written all over it.

“When Scott Coker signed on with Bellator in 2014, we knew that he would constantly innovate and bring new and creative ideas to the promotion,” Spike Senior Vice President of Sports and Specials Jon Slusser said.

How is this innovative? Scott Coker brought the exact same plan to Strikeforce.
Step 1: Sign Ex-UFC stars
Step 2: Sign Fedor
Step 3: Hold HW Grand Prix

I would say Bader should be the odds on favorite to win the whole thing, followed by King Mo, Then Mitrione, Mir, Nelson, Fedor, Rampage, and longest Shot Sonnen. The average age of the field is 38.5 with all except Bader and Mitrione being high mileage fighters.

lol What a silly line up of fighters. 4 heavyweights, 3 light heavyweights and a middle weight, and at least 3 or 4 of those guys should probably be retired. Coker's mindset is obviously "might the casual fan know the name? Yes? He's in." I'm surprised Ken Shamrock isn't in this.

Thesnake101 totally...but possibly injured or quietly retired (ish)?

"noteable abscenses: Bobby Lashley, Kongo, Kharitonov, Ayala"

now it's looking more like the tournament is strictly for ratings minus Lashley who might be injured or something. The list looks very hand picked with some Bellator veterans getting passed by,i'm amazed Ken Shamrock isn't in it.

The old school fan in me is intrigued at the Fedor vs Mir possibility despite..well you know.I bet it ends up being a "random draw" and all the matches end up perfect for what Bellator wants.

Edit: thinking about it...with the age of these guys and possibilities of injury, I bet this ends up being a disaster and Javy Ayala steps in in the final.

bracket

Frank Mir says he is fighting Fedor in the opening round. Interesting pick. Wonder where they go with the rest of the match UPS now. I wanted Fedor vs Rampage.

If this is the top 8 HW on bellator, UFC doesen't have to worry about signing prospect in this division... Sonnen, Fedor, Rampage had nothing to do here! Mitrionne and Nelson will probably destroy the rest!

So here is the opening round fight schedule

http://www.mmanews.com/bellator-sets-dates-events-for-opening-round-of-grand-prix/

• Bellator 192 at The Forum – Jan. 20, 2018: Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (37-12) vs. Chael Sonnen (30-15-1)

• Bellator 194 at Mohegan Sun Arena – Feb. 16, 2018: Matt Mitrione (12-5) vs. Roy Nelson (23-14)

• Bellator at Allstate Arena – April, 2018: Fedor Emelianenko (36-5, 1 NC) vs. Frank Mir (18-11)

• Bellator at SAP Center – May, 2018: Ryan Bader (24-5) vs. “King Mo” Lawal (21-6, 1 NC)

So it would appear the opening round of the GP will not even be over until May of next year. It takes a bit of the luster off the tournament when you spread the opening round across 4 events over a period of 5 months.

They want Fédor and Sonen in the second round!

If they put Bader-Sonen and Nelson-Fédor it will be over quick for those 2

I have no idea what they want from this tournament and I don't think they do, other than extra eyeballs on their frustratingly inconsistent product. This tournament is just a mess of absolute ****.......that I'll end up watching any way.
