And he will fail doing so. IMO, Johnson should have been cut already and cast off to Bellator.  He's overrated as **** and almost always finds a way to choke against guys he needs to beat (Khabib, Gaethje, Dariush, and Diaz being the most recent examples).

If Johnson should be cut, thats mean Poirier, Barbosa and Lauzon also should benn cut?

Khabib and Gaethje are top 5 of the division and if you look back at the Dariush fight, Johnson should have win this one.

This guys is far from overrated....

MJ is such a frustrating fighter to be a fan off. Shown some glimpses of greatness and has had great performances that are overshadowed by his dubious fight IQ and his recent ****** run.

Feel like he may have peaked already when he went on that streak and beat Barboza. Would pick him, but I've found myself to not be able to pick against Elkins, especially now that after the only time I picked his opponent (Bektic) he ended up pulling something out of his ass to win.

@Hyrm

Those were fluke wins imo.  Outside of those anomaly wins, Johnson is bang average.

Really? I think he'd actually replicate those wins against Poirier and Lauzon more often than not, and also be in very competitive fights with Edson.

He's a really bad matchup for Barboza due to his boxing alone, and neutralized him with pressure. Granted I never rewatched the fight, but I remember it being a near shutout for MJ.

I don't think he'll ever be a contender anymore, but from late 2013 to early 2015, he actually looked quite formidable and consistent. That being said, he will give anyone willing to stand with him fits, even the cream of the crop when it comes to striking.

I believe the best predictor for this fight would be Johnson's ability(or inability) to make weight. I have no confidence in him making weight, as he admits he has never weighed at 145lbs since he was 13 years of age. I expect the weight-cut to drain him and significanlty deteriorate his performance.

Still remains to be seen how MJ handles the cut to 145. He says he feels amazing (faster and stronger) and looks cut, but we'll see at the weigh ins. When MJ fades he usually does it against grinding wrestler types like Elkins who can push a constant pace. I don't see that going well for him going into the mid to late parts of the fight. Elkins is as tough as they come and I see him putting in another workman like performance and he may even come close or get a finish in the 3rd if MJ fades hard enough. Elkins by 29-28 decision is my pick.

I think if MJ handles the cut, he can make top 5 in featherweight.  There's some good fights to be had there. I hope he has his **** together and we get to see it. Make it so.

Okay, turns out I was completely wrong; he was able to make weight and not look bad in doing so.

I might have to look at it again.

I thought he looked pretty drawn out. I think everyone including the fighters is thinking quick KO for Johnson or being drowned in the deep water by Elkins.

Edit: that was a pretty stupid comment. Why would Johnson enter a fight he doesn't think he can win after round 1!? But still, I think most people think the cut will diminish him.

Johnson showed good ko power at 155, but cardio issues and some questionable fight IQ cost him dearly recently .... does he still have that at 145? We'll all see tonight, but I'm going with a fighter who's burned me way too many times in the past. I think Elkins will be able to hang with Johnson and take 2 out of 3 rounds for the UD win. I believe Johnson's ko power may be less than expected at the lighter 145 lbs division. Elkins has to get throught the first round, which may be difficult, then get Johnson down and ground n pound out the win.

It's pretty clear now that Johnson crumbles when he loses the upper hand. Rd 1 looked like Elkins had nothing for him and skill for skill he didn't have much. When it came down to will amd desire to win and not give up Elkins had a massive advantage.

Johnson has always been a head case knew he would lose when he was pit as the favorite . He has a 3-7 record as a favorite and 6-2 as an underdog its obvious by looking at those numbers he gets way too ****y and overconfident which is surprising when looking at his record. If he had more performances like the Barboza fight where he didn't gas after 8 minutes he would be a true contender. Every fight he looks great in the first round and then he crumbles.
