I have to credit nunes with having the cardio to go, even winning the 5th. That's the one that did it for her

Shevchenko's complaints are all beyond dumb, honestly. She is the one who essentially held back for 3 of the 5 rounds. So for her to rant like that post-fight acting as if she was an aggressor for 25 minutes is hilarious to me.

That fight was beyond close. It was even going into R5, and those TDs sealed the fight. She has zero right to talk **** about a decision when she decided to actually "go for it" in two of the five rounds.

BS decision. Rounds 2-4 clearly Valentina, nothing really happened in round 1 so you could give it to Nunes via the stupid Octagon control tie breaker and she did nothing but get beat up from the bottom when she took her down in the 5th and lost the rest of the round. How can someone who whiffs and gets countered for 3 rounds win a fight?

Not a robbery, but the wrong decision, imo.

@yoss I usually agree with your takes on the fights. but you're essentially saying "BS decision, close fight". it doesn't make too much sense. I agree that the rounds Nunes lost (namely 2 and 4) were more clear than the ones she won, 1 and 3. But that's the problem with this scoring system. I don't agree Nunes lost the third round, she landed lots of kicks. Fightmetrics agree with that. The truth is... very little happened apart from the takedown during 25 minutes. It was a boring fight. Nobody has the right to complain.

Kinda ****** way to end a solid card.  I personally scored it for Valentina but don't feel like either did enough.  We've seen time and time again that the challenger typically has to do more to get the decision, and this time was no different.

Ill state the obvious but i hate when a rematch doesn't have a definitive winner because you can't book a rematch too soon. (Think wonderboy/woodley 2)

@vazio

I arguably see Shevchenko winning the last 4 rounds and doing it decisively with effective counter striking, which is constantly underscored in MMA unless it results in a knockdown.  The oblique kicks Nunes were throwing to Shevchenko's lead leg were having little to no impact in impeding Shevchenko's movement and while Nunes was the "aggressor" (if by aggressor you mean stationary punching bag, because Nunes was a target that Shevchenko was lighting up all night), she wasn't landing anything with impact or power behind it. By Nunes trying to conserve energy, she became way too static in her movement and did not engage or land effectively enough for her forward pressure to be considered effective in my opinion.

@GreenHornet Nunes landed more on both the first and the third rounds. If you completely discard all the kicks and count only head shots, they landed the same. (http://www.espn.com/mma/fight/statistics/_/fightId/220815 & http://www.fightmetric.com/) If you count the power behind those shots, those from Schvchenko didn't have a lot of power behind them either, because they didn't seem to faze Nunes at all. She was counter punching effectively, but that was about it.

Dude, I don't even know why I'm defending Nunes this much. It was a close fight. I think Nunes did pretty poorly too for a champion. But it is what it is.

It was a close fight that could've gone either way. I scored it 48-47 Shevchenko but there was no robbery. Just a very close fight with several close rounds.

@vazio, take into consideration that I'm not an impartial party and wrote that immediately after the decision was called ... there is a nuance of butthurt in my post ;)

I agree with you, just felt that since the fight was so close, the girl that was winning from a technical standpoint, landing at a higher percentage, making the other miss more (at least from what I saw, didn't check the stats, I could be dead wrong about that) should've got the rounds.

That said, you need to lay down more of an exclamation point to take the belt off a champ. If it's close or 50/50, the belt usually stays put and rightfully so.

I had Shevchenko winning rds 2, 3, & 4. with rds 1&5 being close.

This is just a random thought but I think all these cautious title fights are due in part to the pay discrepancy between champion and challenger pay. Nunes's chick said that the difference between Amanda having the belt and not is something like 1-2 million to 60,000 per year. That's a huge difference. May explain the 2nd Woodley/Thompson fight. That's why I appreciate a champion like Rda who went for it no matter what. He got caught by Eddie, but that's because he was looking for the finish in every situation.

Now I know that another huge factor is the skill level of the fighters that a champion faces. Usually the champion is facing a fighter who is on a major streak (both wonderboy and Maia were wrecking ww). So obviously that's a factor in why I didn't **** on either one of Tyron's wins.

I find myself enjoying the top contender matches more than the title fights recently. Whitaker vs Jacare and Romero are two fights where both guys were going for it throughout. Gaethje vs Johnson is another case where both guys were aiming towards a title shot.

These are just some random thoughts that no one wants to hear, but to hell with it the Steelers game is over now.

I watched the fight again and still scored rds 2-4 for Valentina. The judges must've scored one of the mid rounds for Nunes, maybe the 3rd. What I think won Nunes the fight ultimately is the octagon control. She walked forward more, which looks like dominance even when it's not.

There was only a 14 strike difference in favor of Nunes but Shevchenko clearly landed the better, cleaner shots. The biggest lesson for Valentina here is that she should've emptied the tank in that 5th round. I thought her gameplan was to be more loose in the later rounds but she never seemed to move out of 3rd gear. While I thought Valentina won, she likely cost herself the fight by not clearly winning those rounds, instead of slightly getting the better of her.

So who's next for Nunes? Only Holly Holm seems to make sense, unless she wants to fight Cyborg (doubtful).

If you look at the scorecards, Shevchenko lost the decision because 2 judges gave round 4 to Nunes.

If you go by the judges' scores, the majority gave rounds 1, 4-5 to Nunes and rounds 2-3 to Shevchenko.
