http://www.mmafighting.com/2017/4/19/15365416/new-professional-fighters-league-promises-monthly-paycheck-for-athletes

Few of the bullet points of the new league...

1. Every fighter will have regular fights, no less than three scheduled per year.

2. Every fighter will receive a regular paycheck each month.

The fighters will get 3 regular season fights and those with the best records move on to the playoffs and then a championship round.

Sounds interesting wonder how much the fighters would get for a regular paycheck every month

Considering that at least 4 fighter by weight class will make it to the playoff, thats mean a fighter will have to fight 3 time in the season and 2 in the playoff to be the champion? 5 fight a years, I like that!

The concept is cool. But it's literally the IFL model, and that crashed and burned. Success in MMA is dependent on building stars. Without that, you've got nothing.

I absolutely love this idea.

Im big on tourneys, plus you get to see the best fighters make it into the tourney.

Not sure how the point system will work, but this will certainly gain my interest.

Also, the purse sounds pretty good

Great Idea,

Would love to see it stick.

So, how do the WSOF contracts work? Do they transfer over, or would they have to negotiate again since it's a whole new promotion?

I am all for increasing options, avenues for the couragous, amazing men and women in MMA. But somebody may want to hand the execs over at WSOF/PFL a good and trust-worthy shovel

I loved the IFL and I love this idea. Team stuff could catch the masses eye too, maybe.

I'm not actively rooting against it, it's just that the IFL did this exact thing except they had $150M in funding, while the PFL has $25M in funding. Sounds like a big number, but the IFL burned through 6 times that cash in three years. That would put the PFL on pace to burn out in six months.

Now ... it's different management, but has anything you've seen out of the WSOF management given you faith they can get this going in the right direction?

I don't think a seasonal structure works in MMA. For any team-based sport, injuries are a factor, but if the Patriots are schedules to play on Sunday, they're playing on Sunday, with or without Tom Brady. If your fight is scheduled as part of a season, I just don't see how it's feasible with injuries being as prevalent as they are in this sport.

The IFL model didn't fail because of it's model and you don't need stars to keep an org. running. This idea can work if you do it right, the rosters would have enough fighters for any injuries.

What org has continued to run successfully without any stars to market?

Adding "continued" post-hoc in there does not disprove what I'm saying. Stars of course make it better and probably run longer no doubt, but the point stands that plenty of orgs can run without stars. How about KOTC for one, even the UFC for quite awhile had nothing resembling a "star"

I think IFL absolutely failed because of its model.

When they say the seven tournament champs will win a 1 million dollar purse does that mean each or share a 1 million dollar purse seven ways. Also the remaining 3 million is that spread across all 100+ fighters seven divisions or is it 3 million per division.

The payment model of the IFL failed? Or this new model will fail because of it's payment structure? Not really seeing you show why team structure will fail. Don't you think it's hard to argue team structures would gain steam within the zeitgeist of sports today..
