Magny's the more young and determined fighter, unless he can avoid getting smothered. I think he's got this.

This is a very tough fight to pick due to Magny's length and youth and Maia's age. I could see this fight going either way. If it goes to the ground Magny is obviously ******. If he can keep it standing and keep Maia at the end of his punches he'll easily take a decision. The winner of this fight will be determined by who controls where the fight takes place. I like this match up a lot. Big step up for Magny, but well deserved.

I think this fight depends on where Maia is in his career and his age. If he comes out looking good I don't see why he shouldn't be able to do what Sergio Moraes did to Neil Magny, great match-up though. Maia by Sub or Magny by Decision

@mikeyg

Magny has come a long way since his fight against Moraes, so I don't think that's a valid argument. Before Magny did what he did to Lim, I would pick Maia to take this dec. here, but after the will and Heart Magny showed in his last fight, combined with his surprisingly good chin and superb cardio, Magny will take this fight against Maia.

He should just fight smart from the outside. If and when Maia is failing to take Magny Down, his cardio will quickly fade and this is when Magny will take over. I think Maia could take round 1, and Magny 2 and 3.

Magny also has a pretty good fight IQ, so in my head if you're making a quick "fightmetrics" in your head, Magny edges out Maia in more area than the other way around :)

Have to finish off by saying the I am biased towards Magny :)

Honestly I don't think it if Maia can get him down but rather if he can survive once he taken down. Maia has taken down every single person he attempted to at welter weight, even Rory. So I think the bigger question is can Magny survive once taken down.  Once maia gasses he can stuff him, but Maia shown to be extremely effective at getting people down at Welter Weight, prior to gassing.

@hamderjay Last time I watched Magny, I was telling somebody you can tell he has a high fighting IQ.

This is a big test for Magny though. Let's see if he can keep the fight on the feet and pepper Maia from the outside.

This is a really good fight.

Can someone name a single time at welter weight where someone was able to stuff Maia and fight on the outside with out ever getting taken down?

Maia actually has horrible takedowns in terms of timing a shot and completing a double or a single. He is very good at latching on to someone and dragging them down. Magny needs to keep Maia in front of him and not turn when they are in close quarters. I really believe Magny will use the same strategy Rory did in rounds 2 and 3 of his fight with Maia and score the W.

He looked good in his last fight and fought good in general but I think Magny has a pretty terrible fight IQ.Everyone always lists it as one of his main strengths,I know the commentators always talk about his great fight IQ.Not just watching his fights but studying footage of him for years for fantasy league,watching the same fights over and over,I see the opposite of that,although it looked like things are really coming together for him last fight.I think it's his well rounded skills,cardio and athleticism that wins him fights and get's him out of the situation most of the time where when he should strike he wrestles and when he should wrestle he strikes.I don't think he does well vs Maia at all, unless Maia gasses terribly after one round like vs Macdonald.Maia showed he hasn't really faded too much last fight and is still very dangerous for anyone.

Last time Magny fought someone even somewhat similar to Maia was when he fought Sergio Moraes, and Moraes slept him. Has Magny improved since then? Sure. But he's also been fighting stand-up guys for the most part, and has yet to face anyone since with a legitimate A level ground game, and Maia has the best BJJ at 170, especially in the first round or two.

^^^ Agreed with Taco lover.

That said, it's worth noting that this bout takes place in the new USADA world.

Not saying anything about Maia, but not NOT saying anything either. Dude had abysmal cardio throughout his career, then goes five (okay, four) ridicu-paced rounds with one of the fittest young guns in the division? Also sporting abs for the first time in his career, in his late 30s.

This was the most entertaining fight Maia has ever been in. God willing Magny can do the same so I won't have to tape my eyelids open to get through another Maia fight.

@hamderjay

It's cool man, I don't care if you have biases, I think we all do and I still enjoy other people's breakdowns on fights anyway. I'm not in any disagreement about Magny's skillset but I think the Moraes fight is relevant because he fought someone much better on the floor than him and that fits Maia like a glove. I still think Magny's takedown defense will not hold up and his level of competition hasn't been nearly as good as Maia's. I still think it depends on where Maia is in his career because imo a Prime Maia would SUB Magny on his best day. I am curious to see Magny's gameplan, quite a smart fighter, but even the smart fighter's can get tapped.

Anyway, sick fight.

If Magny can avoid the early submission, I think his cardio will be enough to squeak out a decision.
