Diego wins via decision that he clearly lost.

Or they want a big fight for the Mexico card and Conor vs. <<insert opponent>> is the biggest fight in the UFC right now.

Not everything's a conspiracy theory.

I think it's nice of Conor to help Cain sell a few PPVs ;)

It's not a conspiracy theory. Mcgregor just embarrassed Poirer, who is a much better fighter than Sanchez. For legitimacy and matchmaking/ranking purposes, it makes 0 sense.

Interesting...Diego's durable obviously and there was a time he was actually a solid grappler, but he doesn't seem to use that any more. In addition, he should be on a 5-fight losing streak spanning more than 3 years. Gomi and Pearson are far less talented strikers than McGregor. I dunno if McGregor can get it done inside the distance, but I'll definitely be picking him.

I agree this fight isn't the best rankings/matchmaking one, I'm just saying that their motivation isn't giving Conor a gimme fight to build him up, it's blowing the **** out of their first Mexico card.

Conor and Diego will sell it.
Diego is a big latino name.
They have already exchanged words.

The UFC have everything to lose from this because Diego can potentially be dangerous at every point of the fight (Melendez almost got finished by him) and if he manages to bank on an uppercut out of nowhere or god forbid this fight goes to the judges (I have absolutely zero faith in a Mexican commission, especially after seeing how the New Mexico one operated) they've got themselves a serious dent in their new shiny monemaking toy.

I wouldn't look to much into Sanchez stunning Melendez. Sanchez only has 3TKO wins in 21 UFC fights All against opponents who are quite lackluster except for Florian which was.... over 9 years ago). Wouldn't really even bank on the small chance of him hurting someone as crisp and elusive as Mcgregor.

To put it in context, McGregor has the same amount of TKO/KO wins in 4 UFC wins, as Sanchez does in his 21 fights. It's a major mismatch on the feet.

I would love to see another McGregor knockout, but this ordeal kind of screws Parke. He should be able to beat Diego, and even if he is aging and obviously on a decline, it would be biggest win of Parke's career, especially if it's a really good fight.

Norman Parke is also technically Irish (Northern) as well.

On the other hand Diego's tough to finish and has won more fights on the scorecards that he's decisively lost in the cage than anyone on the roster - and this fight being in Mexico, a country not known for its governing bodies' integrity and a very patriotic one at that. So it's a possible scenario.

Don't get me wrong, I agree this is a mismatch. I even think Conor finishes him within 2 rounds so I'm not too worried about judging. The only think I'm disputing is that this match is for the sole purpose of building Conor up. This isn't the UFC carving him out an easy path by intent (even if that's what ends up happening de facto).

There's that too, but major reasoning, imo is giving the Mexico card (which already has a headliner who doesn't really pump **** up and will have a few TUF unknowns and not very talented fillers) a ****load of oomf.

This is the first card of their long awaited Mexican market penetration. They want to knock it out the park. Hyping up Conor that much more is the added bonus, not the main reason.

I think it's 1 part to sell the Mexico PPV since Cain doesn't.pull big numbers and also it's a great way to hype McGregor up and give him an easy route to a title ( he will get the winner of Aldo/Mendes). I don't like it, but I can live with it. Max Holloway is a harder fight than Diego at this point.

I don't think it's evenPPV  numbers they're concerned with ... I'm pretty sure numbers are still 90% headliner-related and not sure Conor will boost the numbers that much.

It's excitement, build-up ... seriously - what's gonna get you pumped about Cain's pre-fight interviews? What are they gonna put in the promos of what they want to be one of the biggest cards of the year? Randon TUF Latino-America winner? Cain explaining how he's going to win? **** that ****, Conor and Diego spewing **** back-and-forth! Now that's a promo they want on their first Mexican card. A ****load of crazy-ass staredowns leading up to the fight. People are going to want to see this fight no matter who they thinks gonna win by the time those two are done working each other into a frenzy.

You KNOW Cain's gonna bring it on the night, you KNOW it's gonna be an awesome fight, but he doesn't get you pumped before the fight, he doesn't draw you in. Neither does Werdum.

***? Why is Mcgregor going from knocking out a top 5 featherweight to go up in weight and face a not even top 20 lightweight? It makes no sense plus I thought Diego was fighting Norman Parke? This seriously baffles me.. And it will be a big waste if Conor loses which is unlikely but still.

Diego is still a huge name in the sport. Joe fan knows who he is, and IF Conor is able to finish him that would be a huge feather in his cap.

He either wants Diego to live, or he realizes that fighting Diego in Mexico and not finishing him pretty much equals Diego winning by decision regardless of what happened during the fight.
