Extreme weight cutting is obviously not healthy. But we don't know how much this guy cut, and maybe he had another condition that was a bigger contributor to what happened.

I don't know if it's related or there was some other reason (heart problem comes to mind in these cases too), but I hope fighters stop cutting so much weight to gain "advantages" during their fights (which are usually minimal due to speed loss and cardio issues from cutting a lot of weight) and stick closer to their natural weights.
If everyone fought closer to their natural weight, fighters wouldn't be forced to cut against their will just to not be facing giants at a weight class that's supposed to be "natural" for them.
I think there should be stricter rules, as in a specific number, where no matter if your body can take it or not, you're not allowed to cut. I think that 20lbs should be the limit (and even that's stretching it in my book).
I have no idea how to enforce such a rule, but now that the sport's picking up and there aren't the in-between weight classes (which I hate), I think a fighter dying is enough reason to put their minds together and come up with something.

Tragic news, you just don't know all of the circumstances. Cutting weight often goes hand in hand with increasing your fitness levels to be fight ready, which normally takes some weight off of you, but weighing in the day or in some cases days before your fight encourages fighters to try and fight in weight categories below their natural one; and try to put some of it back on quick after the weigh in to gain an advantage in the fight.
I have always cut about 4 or 5kg over the space of 6 to 8 weeks before the fight, but apart from cutting out fatty foods and beer, this comes off naturally, and as I have always had to weigh in on the morning of the fight there has been no chance of trying to be anything other than fit, on weight and ready to fight.
His coach should also have been monitoring his preparation, and only allow their fighters to compete in the right categories, which also makes me think that something else may have contributed to this sad event.
RIP Feijao

This is terrible and i wish it would affect other fights, but it probably won't. Until someone popular slips up and dies from cutting weight it will remain a non issue. The difference between a 5-5 fighter like Souza and Gleison Tibau is money and the experts they can hire to assist them.
I hate to say that i hope there was something else wrong with him, but regardless it's tragic and the timing looks horrible for MMA. That said, every sport has these types of casualties every year and it always makes headlines, even if it was a high school athlete. Bottom line is any one of us could go to sleep and not wake up, or fall over dead walking in the mall tomorrow..... Godspeed to he and his family.

His description of his weight cut is pretty damn extreme too: "...three weeks before the weigh-ins I reach 86kg and 3% of body fat. By then I start to feel a little weak, it starts to get harder to get up and I feel dizzy. When I travel [to the city where the event in taking place] I'm around 84kg and I can't think straight, I need someone with me all the time to help me, as it really gets to my mind. When I reach 82kg, I can't train anymore, my head feels lighter, I can't sleep and I just want to eat everything in front of me. In the last day before the weigh-ins, I hit the sauna to lose 5kg, I feel pain all over my body, in my chest, my heart, I can't breath properly and everything seems to be in slow motion"

This sticks out like a sore thumb to me. From the article: "He got the fight on short notice and had to lose 33 pounds in one week."
Uh, no wonder his body wasn't down with that. There needs to be something done about giving someone a fight in a weight class they're 33 pounds overweight to fight at and expecting them to make weight in one week. That's unacceptable.

I hope other fighters begin taking notes of this and stop with the extreme weight cutting.
How much does Gleison Tibau usually weigh? He seems like a huge lightweight and it looks like he cuts a good amount of weight from his usual walk around weight to make 155 lbs.
Both Tibau and Massaranduba need to take notes of this and stop with the extreme weight cutting to make 155 lbs.
