Paulo Filho on beating Jon Jones

“The way to defeat Jon Jones is simpler than it seems. He’s at an average distance for him, but the opponent has to play inside or completely outside. His reach is 84.5 inches; that’s 84.5 inches the opponent has to climb to hit him. I think the ideal fighter to face him has to be a guy who knows how to get a heel hook, an armbar, a guy who has a good jiu-jitsu. Striking with him is complicated because he’s a very tall guy, so it’s very difficult to approach him. He puts his hand on the opponent’s head, like Anderson Silva, and keeps the opponent away from him. Taking him down is very difficult, too, because he’s an excellent wrestler. He’s a guy who’s innovating and bringing MMA to another level. He lands elbows that did not previously exist and is truly revolutionary. I think the formula for defeating him is to shorten the distance, pull guard and work the attacks there, because I’m sure he’ll make a mistake. I think anyone who has the qualities I’ve spoken about can beat him, but I think they have to be from the old school in jiu-jitsu. The guy also has to have heart because getting in an out the entire fight with Jon Jones will be very difficult. He has to close, pull, climb and try to catch something. Looking at Jones’ wingspan, the pace of his fights, the level he’s at and the way he has defeated his opponents, that’s the only way I can see it happening.”

Easier said than done but Filho may have a point with the leglock/armbar being the way to get a guy like Jones.

Paulo Filho has so much room to talk, because he knows how to make weight and beat wrestlers...............oh wait.

Haha Yeah I know its not like hes ever going to get the chance to face Jones unless Jones is the new Brandon Vera (I hope so Haha)

Did he honestly just say one of the keys would be to pull guard? Maybe he didn't watch the Bader fight. He pulled guard out of desperation and ate elbows.  Then was submitted by guillotine. I'm sure Bader isn't a wizard off his back but I can't see this going any other way with a bjj practitioner.  He could possibly make a mistake and get submitted but his long reach he'd definitely be able to use those deadly elbows and his wrestling base would fare well against a bjj fighter. 
A heel hook I can see Bones being aware of this. I think the only submission that could possibly be done to him is an armbar but would pay a lot going for one. They'd be a bloody mess if they just laid there hoping to register a submission from their back. A flying arm bar? That'd be amazing to see. I think the formula to beating Jones and I've said this many times. *Machida*

I still think it will take someone physically stronger to beat him. Jones can bully his opponents. People thought Bader was stronger but.....

Thiago, I know you don't like him, but they haven't got a chance in hell, trust me. The scary thing is Jones is only going to improve as well. He's going to be the Usain Bolt of the MMA world.

Whether or not he has room to talk or not, the point he makes is still valid, even though it might only be minimally valid... Flying scissor heel hook?

Even if there is a point.. there is no one w/ the athletism to accomplish that kind of sub.  You're not going to do that off your back against Jones.  It would have to be something crazy like Pr0digy mentioned.

He said "slim to none" so it sounds like he's leaving it open that perhaps someone in the next 10yrs will beat him... hah

just wait until rampage fights him and jones throws him to the ground and uses elbows to the body and face to get the tko win. early second round too. the person that beats jones we have never heard of yet imho.
