@Trae It's really a stylistic thing. They like exciting guys, well Mills is exciting and he's a good well known British fighter. Wouldn't hurt to keep him around and put him in the England cards against someone who will strike or some TUF bum.

Sass, Etim, Mills and Volkmann cuts are wrong as well.

For the record I am a a huge Fitch fan and don't think he should be cut...ok back to the jokes...
The UFC is hoping Bellator picks Fitch up in order to decrease ratings.
Jon Fitch was released after testing positive for no testosterone. #UFC
Che Mills got cut after his loss to Matt Riddle. He got humped on Saturday and screwed on Wed. #UFC
Jon Fitch got cut from the UFC. It's been a bad month for wrestling.

Thoresen & Tezuka are understandable.
I will think of Vlad as retired not cut.
Santiago & Hieron must've been due to their high pay being veterans. Understandable. like Aaron Simpson because of his age. None of the 3 were going anywhere in the UFC WW division.
For Etim, Sass, & Mills, this may be a blessing. They now have the notoriety as a "former UFC fighter" and so should get bigger fights in other orgs. Cage Warriors and.or BAMMA will pick them up.
And while Fitch, and to a much lesser degree Volkmann, have good records, they got them by point-fighting. As a fan of the original UFC, I want to see who the best fighter is, not the best self-defense expert.

On the other hand, it might be a good opportunity for some of the other fighters to make a run in the local circuit. They will rack up a few wins and make it back to the UFC eventually with good performances.
This comes down to the business side of things. I've pulled out some interesting numbers on Twitter. If you consider the plan of 33 cards in 2013. You have 24 guys on a card on average. That's 792 spots. 3 fights/year per fighter is 264 roster slots. The merger with Strikeforce brought many new fighters. According to L.Fertitta in an interview in FastCompany close to 50% revenue goes fighters, while UFC's revenue is close to 600 M$ / year. Also note they are building the woman's divisions on the side.

But when you think about it, it's not like they can't bring them back if some of the prospects don't pan out and some of the cut fighters shred through other organizations, so it's not such a hard choice for the UFC to cut a fighter that isn't currently "bringing in the bread".
The luxury of owning the biggest promotion without any real competition.
