I actually really like the idea of Wineland/Barao. I mean, Cruz is still out a minimum of 5 more months. Since he had to have surgery in December, and he was looking at an early Spring return before the damage, I doubt he's going to be ready for quite some time. The 5 months is more a wishful thinking type thing than it is that he's actually gonna make it back. I'm honestly expecting Cruz to make his return in August. To me, setting up Wineland/Barao for early-May would be perfect. 9-11 weeks between fights for Renan, then if Cruz is close to ready a late July/early August showdown is not out of the question. I just don't think setting up Barao/Wineland is going to take away any opportunities from Cruz.

@Zarog nah let him wait, otherwise Barao cleaned out the entire BW division before becoming the real champ. I think the fight should only happen if Cruz gets injured again...

I disagree with the assessment of cleaning out a division. Iuri Alcantara, Raphael Assuncao, Johny Bedford, and Alex Caceres are all legitimate opponents, or with time they will be, in addition to Eddie.

EDIT: Also, Cruz was reinjured in December. 9 months from December is going to be August/September range for a return. And, with Cruz's knee the way it is, it wouldn't surprise me if he was out extra long, especially because his style requires so much movement, especially lateral movement. If his knee is even a tiny bit less than where it was before the first ACL injury, a huge part of his game is hindered. More so than GSP, Cruz needs the knee to be 100% of what it was before.

@Zarog

Alcantara has one fight at BW, no official wins, Assuncao has one good win and two wins against nobodys. With Bedford and Caceres you are really reaching. Wineland is the only one out there. Let's be real here !!!

One can only hope Menjivar wins somehow against Faber, and Bowles comes back from wherever he's hiding...

@diele You act as if Caceres and Bedford don't have a shot. Here's the thing, so many others already blew their chances, so guys like Caceres and Bedford have become part of the group of contenders. More guys like McDonald will come. Just look at Sergio Pettis. He will be in the UFC by the end of next year. McDonald will fight for a title again within the next 28 months, guarantee it.  Bowles isn't in the title picture and Faber shouldn't be (although, who knows with how much the UFC wants him to be champion). Neither are Jorgensen, or Pickett. Most of the stars in the division have already been beat or are inactive or are at flyweight (see Mighty Mouse, Benavidez, and Dodson). That leaves guys like Erik Perez, Alex Caceres, and Johny Bedford vying for title shots.

Anyway, from the sounds of the camp, this isn't going to be an issue. Barao apparently hates fighting at 135. Only reason he does is because Aldo was already the beast of 145. Barao stated that if Aldo moved up to 155, Barao was moving to 145.

Johnny Bedford is the ****. Pure monster, always loved that guy. He's Mini-Fitch, so that instantly makes him a super badass.

"Here's the thing, so many others already blew their chances, so guys like Caceres and Bedford have become part of the group of contenders."

The thing is if Bedford and Caceres would fight top 10 or top 5 guys they would lose right now. If they can get wins against top competition you can call them contenders until then they are just fighters on a win streak.

Erik Perez doing good things as well but look at his record 2 guys are cut already and the other win is against a guy who is 0-3 in his last 3, the guys you call contenders are all untested...

Maybe some 145ers dropping, that would help this division.

They're not gonna let guys on win streaks that haven't fought Barao or Cruz fight the guys that have already lost to them, because they want to make sure the fights maintain marketability. THAT is why they are in contention for title shots.

Who's said they're moving down from 145? Anyone? Maybe Frankie Edgar would. Who else? Most of the guys that are at 145 are at 145 because they can't cut further. 155ers and 135ers are cutting because the weight classes below them are new relative to the division they are cutting from. So, unless you have someone that has stated something about moving down, I don't see any reason to believe that would happen.

But how are guys marktable if they don't have top 10 wins ???

I said maybe some 145ers could drop, I didn't hear anything but it would certainly help, and I think there are guys who could make 135...

Whenever I see Barao fight, I'm extremely impressed. Whenever I see Cruz fight, not so much. I very much like Barao's chances against Cruz. Pretty sure the title is his.

Honestly think Barao and McDonald beat Cruz. Barao with his overall game and McDonald would be able to land a significant blow and I believe would knock Cruz out, not saying Cruz can't win, but I favor them if and when they get matched up.

I think Cruz is the lowest ranked of the 9 champions (8 once they unify the 135 strap). Out of all the other champs we have, I've been astonished by all of them except Demetrious Johnson and Cruz.

Damn Barao is a beast, specially on the ground. Aldo vs Barao now thats my dream fight even tho it will never happen...
But being little more realist i hope Cruz gets better soon otherwise UFC should take his belt away so he can relax and focus on healing and when he's ready he'll be more than welcome to fight for the title.

Caceres isn't that good, and i'm being generous. He would get handled by anyone in the top 10.
