Officially cut today by the UFC:
http://mmajunkie.com/news/21192/former-heavyweight-contender-gabriel-gonzaga-cut-by-ufc-following-loss.mma

Too bad, but he really looked off in this last fight, and just hasn't been able to put it all together despite the potential he showed early on.  I can't even remember him ever really grappling and using his jiu jitsu.

A lot of people got frustrated when Gonzaga decided to stand and strike with everyone in the heavyweight division, despite having one of the most questionable chins in that division. While I agree to some extent that he employed a questionable strategy in each of his last two outings, I think the fundamental problem comes down to a lack of takedown ability. Once he's on the ground, he's probably the best in the division, at least in terms of pure BJJ competition achievements, but he can't get explosive heavyweights down there.

One good thing that separates MMA from other major sports, however, is that--although Gonzaga is no longer in the world's premier league--he still sits comfortably at the top of the consensus greatest knockouts of all time rankings.

I've got it ranked at #2. My note from that ranking: I remember this moment more clearly probably than any other I've witnessed in MMA. I was at my wife's parent's house. Her grandparents were also in town so I was watching the fights upstairs while they entertained themselves otherwise in the living room. We had just seen Cro Cop get smothered on the ground and now that they were back on their feet I, and probably everyone else in the world, were just waiting for him to unleash his famous beat-down on Gonzaga. And then it came. The patented head kick landed flush only Cro Cop hadn't delivered the blow. Rather Gonzaga had thrown it up and now Cro Cop lay in a macabre, twisted heap of twitching limbs folded back on one another. Slack. Jawed. Amazement. Literally, I remember thinking, "My mouth has been open far too long". Unknown to me upstairs, my in-laws had tuned to the fight and seen the KO. My wife's grandmother was exclaiming, "He's dead. He's DEAD. I know it. I just watched a man get killed." She is not a fan of the MMA.

we'll have the paragraphs squared away pretty soon.  in the meantime, you can hit enter twice (put two lines between paragraphs) and you should see paragraphs on the preview.

No idea where he'll fight next but I was just really let down with how he looked in this last fight.  Maybe if he went and trained at Jackson's or something it would be good for him. Lots of talent somewhere inside of that guy.

This fight showed that it's time for him to move on to a camp that is going to push him. It's good to have a your own team but he needs to bring in more partners to push him at this level. I hope he gets picked up by Strikeforce, he'll perform well there before making a return to the UFC.

@ksturdiv i agree.  gonzaga seems like he's been treading water with his training lately.  he needed the wakeup call and it would be cool to see him fight some high level strikeforce guys (arlovski, bigfoot silva, grim), if only for comparison's sake.

Mikeyg, they did think that.  This was less than a year after CC won the Openweight GP.  I remember it distinctly.  Many people on Sherdog were predicting that CC would be HWY champ in the UFC.

He's no longer in the UFC though

That was his last fight on his contract. General consensus around the gym is that he's going to be doing BJJ tournaments from now on.

Lol Didn't catch on until I saw Strikeforce as an option. Any conformation that he's still signed or cut besides Slong's post?
