The question then is how far can Askren go in this sport? Can he go all the way to UFC gold? Forget any specific matchup or worrying about how he would do against GSP. 3, 4 years from now, who knows what GSP is doing or what weight class he's at, or what any other fighter is doing. Instead just look at Askren and decide if you think he has championship potential (future potential).
My answer: I think he is, I think he's that good.

First off Kampman did not hold condit down for 5 minutes and condit got up and blasted Kampman. No I don't think Aksren has a prayer of doing that for 25 minutes at all. I think Condit would be mauling askren by the third round. Aksren was having issues with Jay Herion. He does not have a prayer of keeping Condit down for 25 minutes nor does he have a prayer striking with Condit. Condit is a completely different animal off his back and I don't believe for a second Askren can keep that pace.

He might not be in the top 10 right now but anyone who has watched his fights knows that Mike Pierce is a top 5 welterweight, no doubt.
He lost a fight he should have won against Josh Koscheck (and Koscheck lost a fight he should have won against Johny Hendricks) and half the people that watched his fight against Hendricks think he should have beat him.
If you count those two fights, dude's on a 10 fight win streak with his last loss coming to Jon Fitch. To add to that, he actually won a round against Jon Fitch who is arguably the most dominant non-champion in UFC history.
