John Cofer was selected to be a cast member on the 15th season of the Ultimate Fighter. He won his elimination fight to get into the house via decision over Mark Glover. He was then defeated in the preliminary round by Vinc Pichel via a third round arm-triangle choke, ending his run in the tournament.

At the live finale, Cofer faced Justin Lawrence. He lost the fight via head kick early in the third round. His efforts were enough to bring home his first Fight of the Night performance bonus.
Looking to rebound, Cofer was scheduled to face fellow TUF 15 cast mate Mike Rio at the Ultimate Fighter 16 finale. After another back and forth entertaining fight, Cofer was submitted late in the third round via arm bar. He was then subsequently released from the UFC.
Since his time from being released from the UFC, he has dropped to featherweight to compete.
