In the Final Round of the 2008 Lightweight Grand Prix, injuries suffered by other competitors allowed Joachim Hansen, a fighter who had been eliminated by Eddie Alvarez earlier in the tournament, to come out with the championship belt after knocking out a fatigued Shinya Aoki in the Finals. Although Alvarez had fought his way to the Finals with a Fight of the Year performance over Tatsuya Kawajiri, he was deemed in no condition to fight by event doctors, allowing Hansen to take his place.
