Wiki
Breakthrough MMA 10 Wiki
On Friday, November 22nd the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach will once again be packed full of fans from all around Central Florida for Breakthrough MMA’s “Proving Ground 10”. On top of 18 confirmed matched that evening there will be three title matches and the start of two four-man tournaments. The first tournament will be in the 155 lb. Lightweight division. There will be two fights with the November’s winners facing each other in February at Proving Grounds 11. What do they win you ask…. the winner will be receiving a title shot in May of 2014 at Proving Grounds 12. The second tournament is in the 170 lb. Welterweight division. Breakthrough MMA prides it’s self in having some of the best and brightest starts in Florida and will be looking for “A Breakthough Fighter”. The winner’s in November again fight each other in February to determine who the Breakthrough Fighter will be.
Current Breakthrough MMA Welterweight Champion Calen Holcomb (6-0) with Pete White Boxing looks to defend his 170 Championship against rising start Drew Gaynair (3-1) with American Top Team. Calen last defend his belt against Alex Zee at “Night of Champions’ back in May. Whereas, Drew out lasted Dominic Strouder in a very close split decision at Proving Grounds 9. Could this be the last title defense for Holcomb???
In the second title fight of the evening Breakthrough MMA looks to crown a new 145 lb. Featherweight Champion. Breakthrough MMA’s most recent Champion Anderson Hutchinson has decided to vacate his title and turn pro. William Sizemore (6-2) with American Top Team will be facing rising sensation Freddy Belen 4-0 (Breaking Point MMA/Fabin Rosa BJJ). Sizemore and Belen were both a part of “Proving Grounds 9” in August. Sizemore’s match in August was against departing champion Hutchinson in an extremely close decision in which Sizemore lost. Belen submitted Randy Newell in his debut for Breakthrough. Oh, I almost forgot Sizemore is currently the RCF Featherweight Champion and Belen is the current DFC Featherweight Champion. I can see that this is not going to going to be the last time their path’s cross.
With the recent injury to Shark Team 6 fighter Mike Davis this week the 155
title match between Josh Millwood and Mike Davis will no longer be taking take
place on this event, however Breakthrough MMA’s Bantamweight
Champion Rory Every has stepped up on 6 days
notice and issued a challenge to anyone who is willing to take a crack at his
belt and the challenge was answered by Shawn “Sandman” Valentin.

Breakthrough
MMA returned to the Ocean Center Friday night for Breakthrough MMA 10. The
first two fights of the evening were part of a 135 lb tournament that
Breakthrough MMA started last night. D’John Greer defeated Junior Garcia in the
3rd round due to illegal elbows, while John “Trip” Brinson scored a
knockout win over Sammy Donner just 0:13 seconds into the 3rd round.
D’John Greer will now be facing John “Trip” Brinson at Breakthrough MMA 11 in
the finals of this 135lb man tournament.
In a 155lb match up we saw Trey Webster take a Unanimous Decision over Noah Hewitt. Webster just managed to out strike and wrestle Hewitt and the judges saw it and gave him the win via Unanimous Decision.
At 145lbs Charlie Yanes make his amateur debut last night against Antonio Garavaglia and locked up a beautiful arm bar 0:39 seconds into the second round. Garavaglia had to be helped out of the ring and has confirmed to have a dislocated elbow but is already looking towards his recovery and his next match.
The 6th match of the night was another tournament semi-final in the 170lb weight class. We saw Glen White and Emre Örün put on one helluva slugfest. Örün kickboxing experience was out in full effect as these two warriors traded blows back and forth on their feet, but when it went to the ground White was in total control. Örün and White went all three rounds with Glen White getting the judge’s decision and moving on into the tournament Finals. This by far was one of the most entertaining fights of the evening!
Deon Times faced off against Chris Cornelius next in one of the nights two 155 tournament semi-final matches. Cornelius locked up an armbar at 2:19 into the second round to advance to the finals at Breakthrough MMA 11.
Andrew Joseph and Josh Bainbridge both put their 2-0 undefeated records on the line next. Joseph got Bainbridge into the mount position in the 2nd round and Bainbridge succumbed and tapped out to strikes at 1:20 of round 2.
Randy Newell and Jon Graviano was the final match on the undercard for the evening. This match ended quickly with Graviano sinking in a Guillotine choke and winning by tapout at 0:49 of the 1st round.
The first match of the main card was a rematch from Breakthrough MMA 7 with Robbie Mauricio facing Anthony Agee. Mauricio won this rematch by Rear Naked Choke at 1:13 in the 1st round.
Next up was the other semi-final match in the 170lb tournament. Matt Skidmore faced Casey Whitton. Skidmore wins the match with a beautiful kneebar submission at 0:55 into the first round. I feel that this deserves to be the Submission of the Night. Matt Skidmore moves on to take on Glen White in the 170lb tournament finals at Breakthrough MMA 11.
The following two fights were over so quickly if you blinked you missed it! Tai "Rottweiler" Vann defeated Ervin Colon via Knockout at 0:20 into the 1st round and recived the Knockout of the Night award while, Jimmy Gomes defeated Dominic Stouder by Knockout at 0:26 into the first round as well.
The last match before the title fights was a semi-final match between Eric Peebles and Chris Jacobs. Jacobs looked very impressive and out wrestled his way to a Unanimous Decision over Peebles. Chris Jacobs will now face Chris Cornelius in the 155lb tournament finals at Breakthrough MMA 11 with the winner getting a title shot.
Title Fight Time!!!!
145lb Featherweight Championship Match
William Sizemore faced off against Freddy Belen for the vacant 145lb
Breakthrough MMA Championship. This match went back and forth and truly ended
very premature. Sizemore spend a
majority of the time on top of Belen for most of the round. Belen managed to
get up to his feet with seconds left into round and attempted to sink in a
guillotine choke but as the round ended Belen could tell something was wrong.
Belen could no longer continue and William Sizemore is now your NEW
Breakthrough MMA 145 Champion.
170lb Welterweight Championship Match
Calen Holcomb and Drew Gaynair faced off next with Holcomb’s 170 Welterweight Championship on the line. Gaynair came out and landed a very hard shot to Holcomb which staggered him. The two men went to the ground for a few seconds before returning to their feet and slugging it out for the most of the first round. Gaynair did manage to get a takedown slam on Holcomb which results into Gaynair’s nose getting broken!?!? As the second round began it quickly went to the ground with Gaynair on top bleeding like a leaky faucet in what is one of the bloodiest amateur MMA matches ever! Gaynair went to get back to his feet around the 2:00 mark and Holcomb swept his feet out from under him took his back and managed to sink in a Rear Naked Choke and retain his 170lb Championship at 2:13 into round 2. This match was the Fight of the Night and afterwards Calen Holcomb made an announcement that he has decided tonight was his last amateur fight and has decided to “Breakthrough” to the pro circuit.
135lb Bantamweight Championship Match
In the Main Event Rory Every put his Bantamweight Title on the line against Shawn Valentin. This match started slow with both men feeling out the other then Every and Valentin tied up and went up against the cage. Every then picked up Valentin and proceeds for a big over the shoulder takedown while Valentin posted himself with his arm to break the fall but ends up completely blowing out his right elbow. Rory Every retains his Title via TKO due to a broken arm at 0:59 of the 1st round.
We would like to wish Shawn Valentin the best with his recovery of a devastating injury.
Look for Breakthrough MMA to return to Daytona Beach in February of 2014. There will be three tournament finals decided at the next event.
D’John Greer vs. John “Trip” Brinson in the 135lb tournament final.
Matt Skidmore vs. Glen White in the 170lb tournament final.
Chris Jacobs vs. Chris Cornelius in the 155lb tournament finals
