Overeem vs. Kharitonov I Wiki Update Wiki

When Alistair Overeem took on Russian Sambo champion Sergei Kharitonov in one of the featured bouts of Pride 31, Overeem was a moderate betting underdog. Overeem packed on significant muscle later in his career, but on that night in February of 2006, he was significantly smaller than his Russian opponent, and outweighed by a full 40 pounds. Kharitonov had only been defeated on one occasion, and that was to Pride heavyweight star Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira by decision. Many thought that Kharitonov could win this bout whether it took place on the mat or on the feet.

When the action kicked off in the first round, Kharitonov—as well as the Pride heavyweight division—got a rude awakening. From the start, Overeem initiated a brilliant game plan, taking the Russian down and landing in side control. From there, Overeem maintained top position and kept the pressure on with an unending stream of body shots and knees to the head.

For the first several minutes, it looked as if Kharitonov was defending the knees well. However, as his conditioning began to ebb toward the middle of the round, Overeem took advantage. After softening Kharitonov up from the mount with punches to the head, Overeem again swiveled into side control, where he finished his opponent with a series of unanswered knees to the face. After the fight, Kharitonov’s face was absolutely mangled, and Overeem had notched one of the biggest victories of his career.
