Lesnar vs. Couture Wiki Update Wiki
Questions surrounded both fighters heading into the Heavyweight Championship bout between Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture in November of 2008. Some focused on Lesnar’s inexperience in professional competition—he boasted a 2-1 record prior to the fight—while others questioned Couture’s chances against a much larger, younger, and more athletic specimen. In the end, Lesnar came out on top in the contest of youth versus experience, taking the Heavyweight Championship of the UFC in only his fourth pro fight and helping to push the Pay Per View buy rate of UFC 91 over the one million mark.
Both fighters were respectful towards one another in the lead-ins to the fight. “When I walk into that arena,” said Couture, “it’s going to feel like home. I’ve been around for a very long time, both in wrestling and mixed martial arts, and I don’t think I’ve ever been broken.” Lesnar, ever the charismatic fight-seller, was unforgiving with his response. “I’m not here to do my best, I’m here to win,” he said.
Lesnar entered the cage first to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” and received a mixed reaction from the crowd in attendance. Rogan: “He truly is a freak athlete. He doesn’t even look like a regular human being; he’s a gigantic man and has freak athleticism.” Couture entered second, to a large ovation from the crowd. Rogan: “One of the most incredible things leading up to this fight has been how calm and confident Randy Couture has been leading up to the most incredible challenge of his career.” The first round was largely contested in the clinch, with Lesnar looking to tire out and wear down the much smaller Couture. Lesnar got a takedown midway through the round and worked with hard punches to the head and body of Couture, but “The Natural” managed to reverse him in the final minute and worked up to the clinch position against the cage. Both fighters looked moderately tired at the end of the round.
Both fighters largely abandoned the clinch game in the second round, looking to trade punches on the feet. While Couture had some success—going so far as to open a small cut on Lesnar’s face—the challenger’s punches appeared to be hurting Couture. Eventually, Couture succumbed to a giant right cross to the temple and was finished at the 3:07 mark with a series of hammer fists and short elbows.
Now newly crowned as the UFC Heavyweight Champion, Lesnar was emotional during his post-fight interview. “I can’t believe it,” he said, “I want to thank Dana, the UFC, and I want to thank this guy, Randy Couture. He’s got a lot of balls to take a year off and come back and fight a young buck like me.” Following the fight, Couture would drop down to the light heavyweight division once again, citing his inability to compete with some of the larger heavyweights now populating the division.
