Gracie stood over Kayoom and Kayoom landed some upkicks to Gracie's chin before the Brazilian came down with heavy leather in the guard. Kayoom scrambled and Gracie continued to throw when he had openings. Gracie settled in the half guard and landed shot elbows with some hard knees to the face and thwarted all of Kayoom's escape attempts, staying on top of him and smothering him during scrambles before taking his back as the final minute approached. Gracie fired off punches to the temples then mixed some elbows in as the referee hovered over the action, ready to call a halt if Kayoom took too much punishment. Kayoom managed to roll to his back and Gracie stood over him before the bell.

An inadvertent groin kick to Gracie prompted a short break in the action at the start of the second round. Kayoom landed some nice kicks to the legs and body on the restart as Gracie seemed a bit tentative. Gracie shot in and got a quick takedown and continued his attack from the closed guard of Kayoom. Kayoom was active from his back, attacking with shoulder locks, but Gracie spun out of the holds and landed short strikes. In the final minute Hume stood the fighters and Kayoom went back on the offensive with heavy leg kicks, stunning Gracie with a blocked head kick and picking the Brazilian apart with punches before the bell.

Kayoom attacked again with leg kicks to start the third as Gracie looked exhausted on the feet. Kayoom landed a head kick with the left and Gracie backed away with his hands down, prompting Kayoom to come forward with punches. Gracie powered forward in search of a takedown and Kayoom stuffed him then stood and beckoned Gracie back to his feet. Kayoom landed more brutal leg kicks and easily avoided another takedown attempt and kicked at a downed Gracie. Gracie was slow to get back to his feet but he finally completed a takedown midway through the round. Kayoom was more active with strikes from his back than Gracie was on top.
