Kirwan and Carlo-Clauss met in the fourth bout of Bellator 68 in the lightweight division.
After some early striking exchanges, Kirwan shot for a takedown but Carlo-Clauss defended with a deep sprawl and a front headlock. Carlo-Clauss held Kirwan in the position for several minutes before letting him stand. Kirwan got the better of the boxing exchanges, but again Carlo-Clauss easily defended his takedown attempt and held him in another headlock until just before the bell.
The two boxed it out on the feet in the second, with both landing combos and both utilizing effective defense. Carlo-Clauss looked to have a bit more gas in the tank. Carlo-Clauss moved forward behind his combos, but Kirwan landed the stiffer punches while countering. Kirwan secured a takedown in the final minute and took his opponent's back, but could not capitalize on the position before the bell.
The fighters engaged in a slow kickboxing battle in the third round, with Carlo-Clauss again moving forward as Kirwan looked to counter. Carlo-Clauss received a mouse under the eye but Kirwan was cut under his own, and both men upped their tempo as the seconds ticked away in the final minute.
The judges scored the bout 29-28 Carlo-Clauss, 29-28 Kirwan, and 29-28 Carlo-Clauss, giving him the Split Decision victory.
