Johnson vs. McCall II Wiki
The main event of UFC on FX 3 saw Demetrious Johnson take on Ian McCall in the flyweight division. The winner would receive a shot at Joseph Benavidez for the first-ever UFC Flyweight Championship.
Both fighters traded leg kicks early and McCall took the center of the Octagon, pushing Johnson to the outskirts. McCall shot for a takedown but Johnson reversed him and put him against the cage then secured a takedown of his own. McCall posted and cage-walked to his feet quickly and Johnson backed off. Johnson landed a few punches in the exchanges as McCall attempted to adjust to his speed and lateral movement. A big right hand dropped McCall and cut him on the nose, Johnson following him to the mat, but McCall recovered and sprang to his feet with Johnson in the body lock. Johnson continued to stick and move as McCall failed to land in close, but McCall seemed to come alive toward the end of the round.
McCall pushed forward in the second and got a quick double leg takedown but Johnson scrambled back to his feet right away. Both fighters landed in close but Johnson came out hurt, a bit unsteady on his feet and McCall moved forward. Johnson moved in and landed a crisp combo with a knee to the body at the end but McCall was not phased. An inadvertent low blow to Johnson prompted a momentary halt to the contest as McCall played to the crowd. McCall changed levels on the restart and got another double leg but again Johnson popped back up quickly. McCall got to Johnson's back against the cage and hit a suplex and Johnson got back to his feet, landing some nice hooks up high as he pushed McCall into the fence. McCall landed a beautiful spinning elbow off the break and the two separated. The fighters traded strikes form range in the final minute and McCall hit a trip before the horn.
The fighters clinched up in the third and traded body shots, with Johnson landing a punch on the break. McCall pressed Johnson into the fence and landed some hard knees to the midsection. Johnson reversed the position and got a takedown but McCall cage-walked to his feet and they separated. Johnson landed a combo and McCall responded with a nice knee and a trip. McCall landed leg kicks but ate a few punches to the face and the two were virtually even in the clinch. McCall slowed down a bit toward the end of the round and Johnson was still fresh, landing crisp punches from the outside.
The judges scored the fight 29-28, 30-27, and 29-28 for Johnson.
Speaking with Jon Anik following the win, Johnson said, "I give it up to Ian McCall. He's the toughest guy to ever fight in the UFC, so I felt pretty good. I went back to the old school, let my mind go free and went back to my athletic ability."
