Grant vs. Prater Wiki Update Wiki
The fourth bout of UFC on FUEL 3 saw T.J. Grant take on Carlo Prater in the lightweight division.
Grant pressured the pocket early in the first and the fighters clashed with leg kicks. Grant began to out-land Prater, mixing leg kicks with straight punches and varying his strikes effectively. Grant locked up with Prater and tried to bring him to the mat but Prater stayed on his feet, reversed Grant against the fence and went for a takedown of his own that was repelled. Prater backed Grant off with a straight jab but the Canadian continued to pressure him and stayed busier with his strikes. Grant stuffed a takedown and landed a knee then defended a rolling Kneebar to land on top of Prater in half guard.
Grant landed a right cross then pushed Prater into the fence to start the second, working strikes to the body in the clinch. Grant landed a big elbow on the break that rocked Prater then rushed forward to clinch back up with him. Grant stayed on Prater, clinching and separating to strike throughout the round. Prater struggled hard for a takedown, but Grant defended with a Guillotine then switched to a single leg to get a takedown of his own. Grant sliced through Prater's half guard to side control and stepped over the head and threw punches to the body, forcing Prater to roll to his knees and hit a reversal at the horn.
Both fighters landed some nice strikes high and low at the start of the third, but again Grant's faster pace began to dictate the tempo, as he forced Prater to move back. Prater landed a few straight jabs but the varied assault of Grant had him on the defensive. Grant set up a double leg takedown and hit it, landing in half guard and fighting off a Guillotine attempt as he passed to side control. The grapplers battled furiously for position as Prater rolled, getting caught in a pseudo Twister position before Grant ended the scramble back on top in side control. Grant passed to full mount and utilized some shoulder strikes then took Prater's back as he rolled. Prater escaped the position again and rolled to his knees, but Grant was relentless and suplexed him back to the canvas when Prater stood. Grant had an Armbar locked in at the final horn.
The judges scored the bout 30-27 across the board for Grant.
Speaking with Jon Anik following the bout, Grant said, "I trained my butt off, knowing Carlo. Two in a row now puts me in a position to fight the best in the world, and I'm ready to fight on the main card."
