Stittgen vs. Thompson Wiki
The opening bout of UFC 143 featured two debuting UFC fighters in Stephen Thompson and Dan Stittgen, who faced off in a welterweight contest.
Thompson opened with a low kick and kept an unorthodox stance with his hands low and throwing side and front kicks. Thompson landed another low kick and Stittgen was unable to land in return. Thompson landed a few more kicks and was able to back up and circle away as Stittgen attempted to barrel forward and clinch up. Stittgen connected on a low kick and then a front kick, seemingly deciding to play Thompson's game. Thompson looked far more comfortable in the striking, as expected, however was not landing with enough power to do significant damage. A moment later, Thompson landed a wicked right high kick that crashed into Stittgen's chin, sending him falling to the mat unconscious.
The official end came at 4:13 of the first round with Thompson winning via knockout. Speaking to Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview, Thompson commented, "Man, no words can really describe it, this is the UFC and the best promotion in the world... Those lead leg round kicks, if you develop them it can pack a lot of power and people don't see them."
