Donnelly vs. Mestre Wiki Update Wiki

Mestre and Donnelly took to the cage to kick off the first bout of the televised card in a welterweight tilt.

Both fighters pawed with the jab to start the bout to feel our the range. Donnelly countered a leg kick with a right cross and tripped Mestre to the canvas, where a scramble ensued in which Mestre wound up on top in side control. Donnelly attempted to wall walk back to his feet but Mestre sucked him back down to the mat and triangled his legs, looking to mount. Donnelly got to his knees and tried to get back to his feet but left his neck out, which Mestre grabbed a hold of with an Arm-in Guillotine and rolled Donnelly. Mestre switched the hold to a Brabo choke, but Donnelly fought off the hold and got himself to full guard, where he threw up a few short elbows.

Donnelly went to the legs with kicks to start the second as Mestre measured the range. Mestre landed a hard outside leg kick of his own. Mestre dove on a single leg and dragged Donnelly back to the mat. Donnelly struggled to get back to his feet using the fence but Mestre stayed on him with constant attempts to pass. Donnelly managed to get to his feet with his back to the cage but Mestre had him back down quickly in the final minute of the round.

Donnelly looked to keep Mestre off of his legs with straight punches, but Mestre wrapped him up and pushed him into the fence before dragging him down to the mat once again with ease. Donnelly kept up a more active closed guard this round, throwing up a few submission attempts as Mestre looked to work short punches to the body. Donnelly turned his hips over and got back to his feet but Mestre clipped him with an elbow that busted his forehead open on the way to his feet. Mestre dragged a bloody Donnelly back down to the canvas and resumed his patient offense from the guard. Donnelly attempted a Guillotine near the end of the round but Mestre escaped with ease and kept Donnelly pressed up against the fence until the horn sounded.

The judges scored the bout 30-27 across the board for Mestre, giving him the decision victory.
