The fifth bout of UFC 143 featured Alex Caceres taking on Edwin Figueroa in the bantamweight division.
Caceres opened with a wild array of strikes, including a vicious kick to the groin that sent Figueroa straight to the ground writhing in pain. After a minute of recovery, Figueroa slammed the mat with his hand, bounced to his feet and appeared ready to continue. Caceres continued with his flashy attacks on the restart, slapping a high kick into the face of Figueroa. Figueroa then responded with a high kick of his own, Caceres crashing to the canvas but still able to defend himself. Figueroa dove on top looking to attack with punches, but Caceres was able to avoid much more damage and get back to his feet. Caceres took Figueroa's back in a scramble worked for a choke. Caceres switched to a body triangle then full mount, out-grappling Figueroa as the round time ticked away, perhaps doing enough to steal back the round in his favor.
Figueroa swung for the fences to begin the second round, but Caceres weathered the storm and landed a solid head kick. Several good exchanges back and forth until another kick to the groin landed from Caceres. Referee Herb Dean took a rare two point deduction from Caceres's score in the round and the fighters restarted. Caceres landed a solid knee, bloodying up Figueroa's nose and taking him to the ground. Caceres worked for a rear naked choke as he had a body triangle tied on. Caceres transitioned to an armbar then a triangle attempt, seemingly having it tied on tightly but was unable to capitalize. Figueroa got back to his feet and the round came to an end.
The fighters exchanged kicks to begin the third round. Caceres took the back while standing and worked for a standing rear naked choke. Figueroa timed a drop to the ground to try and slam Caceres off, partially succeeding but immediately giving up his back yet again. Caceres missed an armbar attempt and Figueroa landed some good punches from the top. Caceres had another triangle opportunity, Figueroa dropped down for kneebar attempt, and the fight came to an end after a final scramble.
The judges scored the bout 28-27 Figueroa, 28-27 Caceres, and 28-27 Figueroa, the winner via split decision.
