Jacoby vs. Starks Wiki Update Wiki
The opening bout of UFC 137 saw promotional newcomers Clifford Starks and Dustin Jacoby face off in a middleweight contest.
The pair came out cautiously to begin, with Jacoby circling away from some early attacks from Starks. Starks landed a grazing right hand but then ate a left from Jacoby. Another right hand from Starks landed more cleanly. The pace of the next minute slowed with neither fighter willing to fully commit. Jacoby's striking appeared to be more technical, with good defense and counter-punching. With 30 seconds remaining in the round Starks changed levels and successfully brought Jacoby down to the ground. Jacoby worked for a kimura from his back until the round expired.
Jacoby landed a clean left hand to start the second round. A few moments later he threw a spinning back kick, but again the pace of the fight slowed. Starks lunged in looking for a right hand, missing but then following it up with a good left. Starks shot for another takedown, making it 2 for 2 with his attempts, ending up in Jacoby's guard. Starks began to land some ground and pound and took control of the round, wearing down Jacoby until the bell.
Jacoby landed a good combination a minute into the third period but was taken down again, showing a clear deficiency in his takedown defense and in trouble of losing the fight off of his back. Starks passed to side control but immediately got himself caught back in half-guard and in a kimura. Starks escaped the submission and finished strong with some ground and pound in a relatively dull fight.
The judges all scored the bout 30-27 in favor of the winner by unanimous decision, Clifford Starks.
