Hughes vs. Koscheck Wiki Update Wiki

The co-main event of UFC 135 featured Josh "Kos" Koscheck taking on Matt Hughes in a welterweight fight. Koscheck entered the fight at 13-5 in his long UFC career, and 15-5 overall. The legend and former champion Hughes came in with a 18-6 UFC record and 46-8 overall professional mark. Koscheck was a late replacement for Diego Sanchez, who suffered a broken hand during training camp.

Hughes immediately looked to use his jab, hitting Koscheck in the same spot where he had suffered a broken orbital bone in his last fight. Koscheck came forward with his most aggressive flurry thus far, landing solidly on Hughes. Hughes landed his jab repeatedly and followed it up with an uppercut, and the round looked to be fairly even after three minutes. Koscheck whiffed on a pair of big uppercuts, shot for a takedown, and was stuffed by Hughes. Koscheck nailed Hughes with several big punches. Hughes stayed on his feet looking like he might be able to weather the storm, but Koscheck continued to connect with shots until Hughes dropped to his back. With only seconds remaining Koscheck dove on top, unloaded with a barrage of hammerfists and punches, and Hughes went out from the punches right before the bell.

The official end came at 4:59 of the first round for the winner by knockout due to punches, Josh Koscheck. Speaking to Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview, Koscheck commented, "I just want to say thanks to Matt Hughes for taking this fight late in his career, he's a legend and I'm glad I had the opportunity to fight a legend like Matt Hughes... It was actually nice being on the shelf [injured], and I'm growing as a person and as a fighter."

Hughes was given a chance to speak to Joe Rogan where he commented, "I'm not retiring, I'm going to tell the UFC to put me up on a shelf, and we'll see what happens after that... I love the crowd support when I came out here, I had a great training camp... The plan wasn't to keep the fight standing, but of course you start out every round on your feet."
