Masakazu Imanari took on Abel Cullum in a bantamweight tournament quarterfinal bout at Dream 17.
Imanari immediately shot in and pulled guard, tied up Cullum's right arm into an omoplata and nearly transitioned to the back in an attempt to find a rear naked choke. Cullum escaped but still found himself in danger as Imanari threw up an armbar attempt. Imanari tied on a triangle choke as Cullum lifted him up and slammed him to the ground, freeing himself from a not-yet-tight submission. Imanari attacked from submission to submission, never giving Cullum a moment to relax. In the last minute of the round Cullum finally was able to get to a position to mount some offense, pressing Imanari into the corner on the ground and throwing a few strikes that partially connected.
Cullum landed a low kick to begin the second round. Imanari again pulled guard, bringing the fight back into his comfort zone. Cullum had his most effective sustained output of ground and pound in the fight thus far. Imanari attacked for a rare gogoplata, getting his shin under the chin but unable to lock it in place with his other leg. Cullum landed more strikes as he avoided omoplata and other submission attempts. Referee Samio Kimura stood the pair, Imanari circled until diving in for another takedown, and the tight round closed.
Imanari nailed Cullum with a nice left hook to begin the third round. Another pair of strikes from Imanari surprised Cullum until he flopped to his back. Cullum opted to move into Imanari's guard, but this time would be the one that proved fatal. Imanari tied on a gruesome armbar and forced a desperate tapout from Cullum as his arm was severely hyperextended.
