Barry vs. Hardonk Wiki Update Wiki
Sometimes fact really is stranger—and more riveting—than fiction.
In one of the best fights in MMA history, former kickboxing training partners Patrick Barry and Antoni Hardonk had a violent reunion after ending their friendship under complicated circumstances some years past. Prior to their meeting in the Octagon, both Barry and Hardonk were students of kickboxing legend Ernesto Hoost. While Barry had a positive experience for the majority of his time training with Hoost, he claimed that his teacher favored Hardonk and essentially used Barry as a sparring partner for students he truly believed in.
While Barry claimed that Hardonk got the better of him most of the time in their sparring matches, emotion and necessity brought out the performance of a lifetime for the New Orleans native. After battering Hardonk with lightning-quick punches throughout the first round, Barry finished him off in the second, although neither man left the cage unscathed. For his performance, Barry earned both Fight of the Night and Knockout of the Night honors. The purse, and the bonuses, literally saved him from starvation. According to interviews Barry conducted following the fight, he had been living on a diet of white rice and ketchup in the days leading up to the contest, as he had made poor investment decisions and was on his last ropes. With his back against the wall, he earned $120,000 in bonuses.
In a sport brimming with incredible stories of perseverance and will power, Barry’s struggle stands out as one of the most poignant. His timely performance against Hardonk helped him break into mainstream MMA fan awareness.
