Rivera vs. Philippou Wiki Update Wiki

The second bout to air on the pay per view televised main card of UFC 133 featured Jorge "El Conquistador" Rivera taking on Constantinos "Costa" Philippou. Rivera entered the fight 7-6 in his previous UFC fights, while the relative newcomer Philippou was 0-1 in his lone UFC match.

Rivera attacked first with a lunging right hand and then a pair of low kicks. Philippou clinched up and soon had the fight down and into Rivera's full guard. Rivera worked his way back up against the fence, attempting to stand and eating a few punches as he did so. Referee Mario Yamasaki broke the pair up from a stalemate in the clinch. A solid two punch combination landed from Rivera, though Philippou connected on a nice uppercut moments later. The close first round ended in the clinch.

The fighters began throwing heat early in the second round. Philippou landed a punch that stunned Rivera and sent him to the mat covering up. Philippou unloaded with dozens of punches and hammerfists in an effort to finish, but Rivera held on, reversed the positions and drove Philippou against the fence. Restarting on the feet Philippou opted to clinch up again. Rivera took some heavy breaths and they were broken up by ref Yamasaki. Rivera landed a takedown but did so directly into an omoplata lock from Philippou. A small trickle of blood streamed back across Philippou's head as he leaned back attempting to finish the shoulder submission. Rivera held on and escaped, ending the round on his back.

"Costa" landed a nice upppercut to begin the third and Rivera came back with a knee to head. A big exchange with Rivera hurting Philippou and ending in the clinch. Philippou landed a takedown into Rivera's guard. "El Conquistador" threw up a triangle attempt that Philippou calmly escaped from. Rivera stood and the pace of the fight slowed with both fighters looking tired. Rivera beat up Philippou with punches against the fence for the next minute. The final seconds had Rivera miss on a trip and fall to his back as the horn sounded.

The judges scored the bout 29-28 Philippou, 29-28 Rivera, and 29-28 Philipou, the winner by split decision. Speaking to Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview, Philippou commented, "It wasn't my best performance, I'm happy I got the win... it was pretty close."
