The eighth bout of UFC 135 featured Mark "Super Samoan" Hunt taking on Ben "Northstar" Rothwell in a heavyweight affair. Rothwell came into the fight 1-1 in the UFC and 31-7 overall. Hunt also came into the fight 1-1 in the UFC, and was 6-7 overall in his mixed martial arts career.


Rothwell shot in for a takedown to begin the fight and Hunt was able to circle out of range. Hunt moved forward and landed a nice left hook, to which Rothwell responded with a left jab. Two minutes into the fight Rothwell was able to land a takedown and move into full mount. Hunt fought to get an underhook to get himself back to standing but Rothwell pinned him down. Hunt finally scrambled out and out of danger. Rothwell was stuffed on his next attempt to grab a single leg and Hunt cam eforward landing series of good punches. Hunt actually took Rothwell down next but couldn't keep the fight there. Rothwell's eye was cut open though he secured one more takedown late in the round. Good punches from Rothwell as he pinned Hunt's arm to close out the round.


Hunt jumped forward with a left hook to start the second round, stuffed a takedown, and landed his first low kick of the fight. Another low kick from Hunt a moment later, and some big swings and misses as Rothwell pressed forward looking for a takedown. Hunt turned the tables and took Rothwell down, landing some good ground and pound from inside the guard. With Rothwell looking exhausted, Hunt pounded away on his opponent and nearly secured an armbar as time ran out.


The third round was a grueling affair for both fighters, exhausted and working to maintain superior position. Hunt controlled more of the action, battering Rothwell and looking to have won the decision.


The judges scored the bout 29-28, 29-27, and 30-27 all in favor of Mark Hunt, the winner by unanimous decision.
