Escovedo vs. Barão Wiki Update Wiki
27-1 Renan Barao took on the WEC's first ever featherweight champion in a battle of UFC newcomers in the first contest at UFC 130.
The heralded Barao controlled the action through round one with a series of takedowns, the first in the early moments and the last in the final minute. In between them, the lanky Escovido pulled guard, where the bout largely stalled out through round one. Escovido did little to prevent the takedowns and Barao did little to pass guard, leading to five minutes of peppering inside shots and elbows.
Round two was more of the same, but Escovido began to demonstrate some success in the standup game with occasional knees and a long left hand. Barao's ease in securing takedowns, however, allowed him to control the pace and positioning too easily. Escovido momentarily swept Barao in the final seconds of round two, demonstrating his first moment of ground success from underneath. Too little time remained in the round for him to capitalize.
The standup action improved in the final frame, as both men mixed up kicks and punches despite one early takedown from Barao. A spinning backfist from Barao halfway through the round nearly landed flush. Good roundhouse kicks from Escovido met a series of stiff frontkicks from Barao. A right hand from Barao late in the round stung Escovido, slowing his movement, and Barao quickly followed up with a takedown. Another takedown with seconds remaining and it is Barao's takedowns which prove the difference in the fight.
The judges have it 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 for Renan Barao.
