Hornbuckle vs. Weedman II Wiki Update Wiki
In the first televised bout of the Bellator fourth season, Dan Hornbuckle took on Brent Weedman.
Hornbuckle came out quickly with a takedown and attempted to move to full mount. Weedman scrambled out and into top position yet was immediately defending against a triangle choke. Out of danger and in Hornbuckle's full guard, a small amount of blood trickled out of Weedman's eyebrow. Hornbuckle threw his legs up and put Weedman in danger with an armbar, then transitioned to a triangle choke that Weedman was able to defend with both arms in. Weedman escaped and Hornbuckle jumped back to his feet. Weedman clinched up and threw Hornbuckle to the ground with thirty seconds left in the round. Working for an armbar and then a kimura, Weedman didn't quite have enough time to put Hornbuckle in deep trouble as the round ended.
Weedman missed with a left hook to begin round two. Hornbuckle pushed Weedman up against the fence and as they separated Weedman fired off a pair of his karate-style high kicks. Hornbuckle attacked with knees to the head and punches to the body, catching Weedman off-balance with a kick. Diving on top and looking to find a choke, Hornbuckle lost position and ended up on his back. Weedman sat back looking for a heel hook, fighting for the submission as Hornbuckle threw kicks to the body from other side. Weedman passed into side control after a scramble from both fighters, moved to full mount, and took Hornbuckle's back. The clocked ticked down with Weedman unable to secure a rear naked choke.
Weedman came forward with kicks in round three, then Hornbuckle landed one of his own. Hornbuckle took Weedman's back standing and threw knees to the thigh. Weedman rolled for a kimura yet Hornbuckle held position and now had Weedman's back on the ground. Hornbuckle worked hard just to keep in dominant position as Weedman ended up on his back. Hornbuckle landed a pair of punches from the top and there was one more flurry as the fighters stood with seconds remaining.
The judges scored the bout 29-28 unanimously for Brent Weedman, who advanced to the welterweight tournament semifinals in an upset over Dan Hornbuckle. Speaking to Jimmy Smith in the post-fight interview, Weedman commented, "I felt like it was 1-1 going into the 3rd round, I felt like I was attacking off of my back in the third... It's Dan Hornbuckle, the guy's incredible... Dan's the toughest opponent I've ever faced in 30 fights."
