Diaz vs. MacDonald Wiki Update Wiki
The seventh bout of UFC 129, and the featured fight to appear on the Spike TV preliminary card broadcast, featured welterweights Nate Diaz and Rory MacDonald. Diaz entered the contest at 8-4 in his prior UFC fights and 13-6 overall. MacDonald came into the bout at 1-1 in his prior UFC fights and 10-1 overall.
MacDonald came out and backed Diaz down quickly, throwing a front kick but not committing to any big strikes in the opening seconds. Diaz took his turn at being in the center of the cage as MacDonald circled and threw low kicks. The fighters swung big punches in the clinch and each landed with knees to the body. MacDonald pulled Diaz down and nearly had the back, couldn't hold the position and the fighters jumped back up. MacDonald mixed up his attack with punches and kicks from all angles, clinched and tried to get Diaz down. A good combination from Nate Diaz who then grabbed a single leg that was defended from MacDonald. As the horn sounded to close out the round, Diaz taunted MacDonald.
MacDonald came out in round two and pushed Diaz up against the cage. MacDonald pulled the fight down with a nice takedown, and then again a few moments later. Both times MacDonald opted to stand up and over Diaz rather than play in his guard, and the fights resumed their standing position. Diaz connected on a good left. Both fighters connected with good shots over the remainder of the round, with MacDonald seemingly landing the greater number in a close fight.
A minute into the third round Diaz was slammed violently to the mat twice by MacDonald during a rousing sequence, and MacDonald worked from top position. MacDonald tagged Diaz with a right punch and then landed a monster German suplex as Diaz attempted to escape. MacDonald stuffed a takedown attempt, briefly played in Diaz's guard but was cautious to not get tied up with the jiu jitsu specialist. MacDonald pumped his arms in seeming victory after the final bell, confident that he had done enough to win on the scorecards.
The judges scored the bout 30-26, 30-27, and 30-26 in favor of Rory MacDonald. Speaking to Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview, MacDonald commented, "I'm on top of the world... the gameplan was to control the fight, for those of you who watched my last fight I got very emotional, I'm normally like Fedor, no emotion, but with the crowd..."
